Before then, the English mostly referred to the waterway as a \u201c<strong>Narrow Sea.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>French refer<\/strong> to the Channel <strong>as \u201cla Manche\u201d<\/strong> because of its sleevelike shape.<\/li>\n<li>With an area of some 29,000 square miles (75,000 square km), it is the <strong>smallest of the shallow seas covering<\/strong> the <strong>continental shelf of Europe.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is 350 miles (560 kilometers) long. At its widest point, it is 150 miles (240 kilometers) across. At its narrowest, it is only 21 miles (34 kilometers) across.<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>shallow waterway<\/strong> with an average depth of 63 m.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate<\/strong>: <strong>Temperate maritime climate, <\/strong>with warm summers and cold winters.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>main islands<\/strong> are the <strong>Isle of Wight<\/strong> and the <strong>Channel Islands<\/strong> (a collection of islands including Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark).<\/li>\n<li>It is one of the <strong>world\u2019s busiest shipping areas<\/strong>, linking southern England, the United Kingdom to northern France.<\/li>\n<li>It accounts for up to <strong>20% of the global maritime trade<\/strong> and <strong>connects the Atlantic Ocean to the North Sea.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a Channel?<\/h3>\n<p>A channel is a wide strait or waterway between two landmasses that lie close to each other.
