The medical term for nearsightedness is myopia.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>How does it occur?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For people with normal vision, light passes through the clear cornea at the front of the eye and is focused by the lens onto the surface of the retina.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who are having myopic <\/span><b>typically have eyeballs that are too long<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from front to back.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, light entering the eye is focused too far forward, in front of the retina instead of on its surface.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is this change that <\/span><b>causes distant objects to appear blurry.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The longer the eyeball is, the farther forward light rays will be focused and the more severely nearsighted a person will be.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eye experts are still unsure of the exact cause of myopia, but believe it to be a mix of <\/span><b>hereditary and environmental factors.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It usually <\/span><b>begins in childhood or adolescence.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It tends to <\/span><b>worsen with age until adulthood<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, when it may stop getting worse (stabilize).
