


{"id":27184,"date":"2025-11-04T11:09:26","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T05:39:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27184"},"modified":"2025-11-06T10:56:43","modified_gmt":"2025-11-06T05:26:43","slug":"katkari-tribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/katkari-tribe\/","title":{"rendered":"Katkari Tribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Katkari Tribe Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To highlight the plight of the Katkari Tribe, the Shramjeevi Organisation will hold a two-day protest featuring silent fasts and symbolic lamps, demanding land rights, unpaid wages, and dignity for the marginalised community.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Katkari Tribe<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a <\/span><b>primitive tribe<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found in <\/span><b>Maharashtra <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Pune, Raigad, and Thane districts) a<\/span><b>nd parts of Gujarat.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>one of the 75 Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PVTGs) in India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were <\/span><b>historically forest dwellers.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katkaris are also <\/span><b>known as Kathodis <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because of their <\/span><b>old occupation of making Katha (Catechu), the thickened sap from wood of Khair (Acacia catechu).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Katkaris were also one of the <\/span><b>few tribal communities<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of India <\/span><b>that consumed rodents.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of them still live in their traditional <\/span><b>huts made of bamboo and anything they can find in the forest.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite having a <\/span><b>patriarchal system, does not follow the joint family structure<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, preferring the nuclear family model.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Language<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are <\/span><b>bilingual<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, speaking the <\/span><b>Katkari language amongst themselves and Marathi with others.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few of them speak <\/span><b>Hindi as well.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Occupation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They serve as <\/span><b>agricultural labourers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and s<\/span><b>ell firewood and some jungle fruits.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also take up <\/span><b>fishing <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for domestic consumption, c<\/span><b>oal making, and brick manufacturing.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have <\/span><b>tremendous knowledge about uncultivated foods <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">like <\/span><b>fish, crabs, animals, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">birds, tubers\/rhizomes, wild vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>majority <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the Katkari families are <\/span><b>landless<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
