


{"id":27233,"date":"2024-10-14T08:13:06","date_gmt":"2024-10-14T02:43:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27233"},"modified":"2025-10-13T11:35:31","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T06:05:31","slug":"alkanes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/alkanes\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Alkanes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Alkanes:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Alkanes are <strong>organic compounds<\/strong> that consist e<strong>ntirely of single-bonded carbon and hydrogen atoms<\/strong> and lack any other functional groups.<\/li>\n<li>Alkanes have the general formula <strong>CnH2n + 2 (<\/strong>where n is an integer).<\/li>\n<li>Alkanes can be subdivided into three groups: the <strong>linear straight-chain alkanes,branched<\/strong> alkanes, <strong>and cycloalkanes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They show <strong>little chemical affinity for other substances<\/strong> and are <strong>chemically inert<\/strong> to most laboratory reagents.<\/li>\n<li>They are also <strong>relatively inert biologically<\/strong> and are not often involved in the chemistry of living organisms.<\/li>\n<li>Alkanes do, <strong>however, react with oxygen, halogens<\/strong>, and a few other substances under appropriate conditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reaction with oxygen occurs during combustion<\/strong> in an engine or furnace <strong>when an alkane is used as a fuel<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Carbon dioxide and water are formed as products, and a large amount of heat is released.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>They are commercially very important, being the <strong>principal constituent of gasoline<\/strong> and <strong>lubricating oils <\/strong>and are extensively employed in organic chemistry.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Examples<\/strong> of alkane include <strong>methane, ethane, <\/strong>propane, butane, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are halogens?<\/h3>\n<p>Halogens are any of the six nonmetallic elements that constitute Group 17 (Group VIIa) of the periodic table.
