{"id":27319,"date":"2024-10-18T03:21:14","date_gmt":"2024-10-17T21:51:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27319"},"modified":"2025-10-10T12:38:40","modified_gmt":"2025-10-10T07:08:40","slug":"petra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/petra\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Facts about Petra"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Petra:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a historic and <strong>archaeological city<\/strong> located in <strong>southern Jordan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was the <strong>center of an Arab kingdom<\/strong> in <strong>Hellenistic and Roman times<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Petra was <strong>established in 312 AC<\/strong>, which makes it around 2000 years old.<\/li>\n<li>It became the <strong>capital of the Nabateans people<\/strong>, an <strong>Arab tribe<\/strong>, who were referred to in the Bible.<\/li>\n<li>Under Nabataean rule, Petra <strong>prospered as a centre of the spice trade<\/strong> that involved such disparate realms as China, Egypt, Greece, and India.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Romans conquered Petra<\/strong> in 106 A.C, and they turned the territory into a Roman province of Arabia.<\/li>\n<li>During the second and third centuries, Petra continued to grow, and in the <strong>seventh century, the Romans lost the power of Petra to Islam.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the 12th century, Petra was once again taken by different leaders, and for a while, Petra was hidden until it was found by Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt in 1812.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Many of Petra\u2019s <strong>buildings<\/strong> were <strong>carved directly into rocky sandstone cliffs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The name Petra comes from the <strong>Greek word for \u201crock<\/strong>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>city<\/strong> of Petra was <strong>built on a terrace with the Wadi Musa<\/strong> (the <strong>Valley of Moses<\/strong>) <strong>running<\/strong> through it <strong>east to west.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>valley<\/strong> is <strong>enclosed by sandstone cliffs<\/strong> veined with shades of red and purple varying to pale yellow.<\/li>\n<li>Petra is home to roughly <strong>800 tombs<\/strong>, therefore known as the <strong>\u201cRoyal Tombs\u201d,<\/strong> with the <strong>most renowned being \u2018The Treasury\u2019<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>To support the ancient city\u2019s large population, its inhabitants maintained an <strong>extensive hydrological system,<\/strong> including dams, cisterns, rock-carved water channels, and ceramic pipes.<\/li>\n<li>Petra has also been <strong>referred to as<\/strong> the \u201c<strong>Rose City\u201d<\/strong> because of the <strong>color of the stones <\/strong>used in its buildings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Petra has been a <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong> since 1985.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?<\/h3>\n<p>A World Heritage site is a landmark or area with legal protection by an international convention administered by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
