{"id":27351,"date":"2024-10-19T08:48:21","date_gmt":"2024-10-19T03:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27351"},"modified":"2025-10-13T14:39:04","modified_gmt":"2025-10-13T09:09:04","slug":"next-generation-missile-vessels-ngmv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/next-generation-missile-vessels-ngmv\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Next Generation Missile Vessels (NGMV):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The NGMVs would be <strong>heavily armed war vessels<\/strong> incorporating <strong>stealth, high speed,<\/strong> and <strong>offensive capability<\/strong> being built for the <strong>Indian Navy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Six NGMVs are being built by<\/strong> government-run <strong>Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL)<\/strong> at a cost of Rs 9,805 crore.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>delivery<\/strong> of ships is <strong>scheduled to commence from March 2027.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>primary role<\/strong> of the ships would be to <strong>provide offensive capability against enemy warships<\/strong>, merchantmen, and land targets.<\/li>\n<li>These ships will be capable of conducting <strong>Maritime Strike Operations and Anti Surface Warfare Operations<\/strong> and would be a potent instrument of sea denial for enemy ships, especially at choke points.<\/li>\n<li>In a defensive role, these ships would be employed for Local Naval Defence operations and seaward defence of Offshore Development Area.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>core of the NGMV propulsion system<\/strong> is the <strong>LM2500, a marine gas turbine<\/strong>, <strong>manufactured by<\/strong> the American engine manufacturer<strong> General Electric<\/strong>. LM2500 is engineered to unleash superior power while meeting stealth requirements.<\/li>\n<li>With a top speed of 35 knots (64 kmph), these vessels carry an <strong>array of anti-surface weapons.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The CSL will equip the vessels with <strong>loitering munitions, unmanned vehicles,<\/strong> and other guided weapons to add to its firepower.<\/li>\n<li>The NGMVs&#8217; <strong>primary weapon<\/strong> is anticipated to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/brahmos-missile\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>BrahMos supersonic cruise missile<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> capable of striking targets at long ranges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a gas turbine?<\/h3>\n<p>A gas-turbine engine is any internal-combustion engine employing a gas as the working fluid used to turn a turbine.
