text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cornea is the <\/span><b>clear outer layer at the front of the eye<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>covers the pupil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the opening at the center of the eye), <\/span><b>iris <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the colored part of the eye), <\/span><b>and anterior chamber <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the fluid-filled inside of the eye).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Viewed from the front of the eye, the cornea<\/span><b> appears slightly wider than it is tall.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This is <\/span><b>because the sclera <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the &#8220;<\/span><b>white&#8221; of the eye) slightly overlaps the top and bottom of the anterior cornea.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cornea\u2019s <\/span><b>main function is to refract, or bend light.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The cornea is <\/span><b>responsible for focusing most of the light that enters the eye.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>As light passes through the cornea,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is <\/span><b>partially refracted <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before reaching the lens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>curvature of the corne<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a, which is spherical in infancy but <\/span><b>changes with age, gives it its focusing power.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cornea <\/span><b>provides <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">approximately<\/span><b> 65 to 75 percent of the focusing power <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the eye.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>remainder <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the focusing power of the eye is <\/span><b>provided by the crystalline lens, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">located directly <\/span><b>behind the pupil.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cornea\u2019s specific shape<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> plays a key <\/span><b>role in how your eyesight works <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>filters some ultraviolet (UV) rays.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Except at its margins<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><b>cornea contains no blood vessels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but it d<\/span><b>oes contain many nerves<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and is <\/span><b>very sensitive <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to pain or touch.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since there are no nutrient-supplying blood vessels in the cornea,<\/span><b> tears and the aqueous humor (a watery fluid)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the anterior chamber <\/span><b>provide the cornea with nutrients.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Most refractive errors<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 <\/span><b>nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 are <\/span><b>due to a less-than-optimal curvature or symmetry of the cornea.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cornea is <\/span><b>incredibly sensitive,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helping you instinctively and immediately <\/span><b>react to stop anything from harming your eyes further.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because corneas are the first line of defense for the surface of your eye, they\u2019re also <\/span><b>prone to injuries and damage.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cornea<\/span><b> tends to repair itself quickly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from minor abrasions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
