{"id":27514,"date":"2024-10-25T11:10:51","date_gmt":"2024-10-25T05:40:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27514"},"modified":"2025-04-08T10:16:25","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T04:46:25","slug":"international-association-of-ports-and-harbours","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/international-association-of-ports-and-harbours\/","title":{"rendered":"International Association of Ports and Harbours"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About International Association of Ports and Harbours:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>non-governmental organization<\/strong> (NGO) established in November 1955.<\/li>\n<li>It has been developed into a global alliance of ports, representing today some 185 ports and 160 port-related businesses in 88 countries as of 31 August 2024.<\/li>\n<li>The member ports together handle well over 60% of the world\u2019s sea-borne trade and over 60% of the world&#8217;s container traffic.<\/li>\n<li>It aims to be the <strong>global trade association<\/strong> of choice <strong>for port<\/strong> authorities and operators, representing their interests at regulatory level at the International Maritime Organization, the World Customs Organization, the International Standards Organization and other global alliances.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarter:<\/strong> Tokyo, Japan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Initiative of Mormugao Port Authority<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The port&#8217;s <strong>incentive program, \u2018Harit Shrey,\u2019<\/strong> launched in October 2023, offers discounts on port charges based on <strong>Environment Ship Index<\/strong> (ESI) scores, rewarding ships with higher environmental performance.<\/li>\n<li>Since the introduction of the <strong>\u201cHarit Shrey scheme,\u201d<\/strong> many ships have benefited from the incentives aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions.<\/li>\n<li>This initiative supports the broader goal of achieving <strong>long-term emission reductions<\/strong> in maritime operations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is the Environment Ship Index?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It identifies <strong>seagoing ships<\/strong> that perform <strong>better in reducing air emissions<\/strong> than required by the current emission standards of the International Maritime Organization, the Environmental Ship Index.<\/li>\n<li>It evaluates the amount of <strong>nitrogen oxide<\/strong> (NOX), <strong>sulphur oxide<\/strong> (SOX) that is released by a ship and includes a reporting scheme on the greenhouse gas emission of the ship.<\/li>\n<li>The ESI is a good indication of the environmental performance of ocean-going vessels and will assist in identifying cleaner ships in a general way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is a Dry Port?<\/h3>\n<p>A dry port is a port that is away from the sea. It is more inland and connected to a seaport with either a paved road or railway.
