


{"id":27538,"date":"2024-10-26T06:12:35","date_gmt":"2024-10-26T00:42:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27538"},"modified":"2025-04-08T10:27:05","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T04:57:05","slug":"national-mission-for-manuscripts-nmm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/national-mission-for-manuscripts-nmm\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Why in News:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Presently<\/strong>, <strong>NMM<\/strong> is a <strong>part of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>new body<\/strong>, likely to be named the National Manuscripts Authority, <strong>will be an autonomous entity <\/strong>under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It was established in February 2003, by the <strong>Ministry of Tourism and Culture<\/strong>, Government of India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mandate<\/strong>: <strong>Documenting, conserving and disseminating<\/strong> the <strong>knowledge preserved in<\/strong> the <strong>manuscripts<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Motto: \u2018Conserving the past for the future\u2019<\/li>\n<li>A unique project in its programme and mandate, the NMM seeks to<strong> unearth and preserve the vast manuscript wealth of India.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India possesses<\/strong> an estimate of <strong>ten million manuscripts<\/strong>, probably the <strong>largest collection in the world.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These cover a variety of themes, textures, and aesthetics, scripts, languages, calligraphies, illuminations, and illustrations.<\/li>\n<li>While <strong>75%<\/strong> of the existing manuscripts <strong>are in Sanskrit,<\/strong> 25% are in regional languages, according to the NMM.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Locate manuscripts<\/strong> through a national-level survey and post-survey.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Document<\/strong> each and <strong>every manuscript<\/strong> and manuscript repository, <strong>for a National Electronic Database<\/strong> that <strong>currently contains<\/strong> information on <strong>four million manuscripts<\/strong> making this the <strong>largest database on Indian manuscripts<\/strong> in the world.<\/li>\n<li>Conserve manuscripts<strong> incorporating both modern and indigenous methods<\/strong> of conservation and training a new generation of manuscript conservators.<\/li>\n<li>To <strong>train the next generation of scholars in various aspects of Manuscript Studies<\/strong> like languages, scripts and critical editing and cataloguing of texts and conservation of manuscripts.<\/li>\n<li>To promote access to manuscripts by <strong>digitizing the rarest and most endangered manuscripts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>To promote <strong>access to manuscripts through the publication<\/strong> of critical editions of unpublished manuscripts and catalogues.<\/li>\n<li>To <strong>facilitate public&#8217;s engagement with manuscripts<\/strong> through lectures, seminars, publications and other outreach programmes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>To achieve this mandate, the mission has <strong>established<\/strong> more than <strong>100 Manuscripts Resource Centres<\/strong> and <strong>Manuscripts Conservation Centres<\/strong> all over India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is a Manuscript?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A manuscript is a <strong>handwritten composition on paper, bark, cloth<\/strong>, metal, palm leaf, or <strong>any other material dating back<\/strong> at least <strong>seventy-five years<\/strong> that <strong>has significant scientific<\/strong>, <strong>historical, or aesthetic value<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Lithographs and printed volumes are not manuscripts.<\/li>\n<li>Manuscripts are found in hundreds of <strong>different languages and scripts.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Often, one language is written in <\/strong>a number of <strong>different scripts.<\/strong> For example, Sanskrit is written in Oriya script, Grantha script, Devanagari script, and many other scripts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Manuscripts are <strong>distinct from historical records such as epigraphs on rocks<\/strong>, <strong>firm ans<\/strong>, and <strong>revenue records,<\/strong> which provide direct information on events or processes in history.<\/li>\n<li>Manuscripts <strong>have knowledge content.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is Lithography?<\/h3>\n<p>A lithograph is a print that&#8217;s made using a stone or metal plate.
