solar power project near Sambhar Lake, warning that even a relatively small installation could disturb the fragile wetland ecosystem. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sambhar Lake<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located in the districts of Nagaur and Jaipur in <\/span><b>Rajasthan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the <\/span><b>largest inland saltwater <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/lakes-in-india\/\" target=\"_blank\">lake in India<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This saline wetland is <\/span><b>elliptical in shape<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with a length of 35.5 km and a breadth varying between 3 km and 11 km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It covers an area in excess of 200 sq.km., <\/span><b>surrounded on all sides by the Aravalli hills.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The waters of <\/span><b>five streams feed the lake:<\/b> <b>Rupangarh and Mendha are the main ones<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the lesser ones are Samoad, Khari, and Khandela.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was designated as a <\/span><b>Ramsar site<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the year 1990.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lake is <\/span><b>divided by a 5-kilometer-long dam made of stone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>East of the dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are <\/span><b>salt evaporation ponds<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where salt has been farmed for a thousand years.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Salt Production<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is known for the production of<\/span><b> brine\/salt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and also houses one of the <\/span><b>largest salt manufacturing units in the country.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It accounts for nearly<\/span><b> 9% of the country\u2019s total salt production.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>specialized algae and bacteria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> growing in the lake provide <\/span><b>striking water colours \u2013 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colours that also impart their <\/span><b>distinctive hues to the salt that is harvested <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 and support the lake\u2019s ecology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the most important <\/span><b>wintering area for flamingoes <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(both Phoniconaias minor and Phoenicopterus roseus) in India outside the Rann of Kachchh.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other <\/span><b>migratory species like pelicans, common shelduck, redshank,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and common sandpiper, black-winged stilt, Kentish plover, and Ringed plover, Ruff, and Sociable lapwing are also found
