{"id":27609,"date":"2024-10-28T07:31:25","date_gmt":"2024-10-28T02:01:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27609"},"modified":"2025-04-08T10:58:56","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T05:28:56","slug":"kittur-rani-channamma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kittur-rani-channamma\/","title":{"rendered":"Kittur Rani Channamma"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Kittur Rani Channamma:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>She was born in Kakati, a small village in today\u2019s <strong>Belagavi district of Karnataka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>She became queen of Kitturu (now in Karnataka) when she married <strong>Raja Mallasarja of the Desai family.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>After Mallasarja\u2019s death in 1816, his eldest son, Shivalingarudra Sarja, ascended the throne.<\/li>\n<li>Before his death in 1824, Shivalingarudra adopted a child, <strong>Shivalingappa<\/strong>, as the successor.<\/li>\n<li>However, the British East India Company <strong>refused to recognise Shivalingappa as the successor<\/strong> of the kingdom under the \u2018<strong>doctrine of lapse\u2019.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Key facts about the Kittur Rebellion<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>John Thackery, the British official at Dharwad, launched an attack on <strong>Kittur in October 1824.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In this first battle British forces lost heavily and the Collector and political agent, St. John Thackeray was killed by the Kitturu forces.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Two British officers, <strong>Sir Walter Elliot and Mr. Stevenson<\/strong>, were also taken as hostages.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>However, the British army again attacked the Kittur Fort and captured it.<\/li>\n<li>Rani Chennamma and her family were imprisoned and jailed at the fort in Bailhongal, where she died in 1829.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What was the Doctrine Of Lapse theory?<\/h3>\n<p>This doctrine stated that any princely state or territory directly influenced by the British East India Company would be annexed if the ruler died without a male heir.
