{"id":27613,"date":"2025-10-06T11:21:10","date_gmt":"2025-10-06T05:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27613"},"modified":"2025-10-06T15:30:55","modified_gmt":"2025-10-06T10:00:55","slug":"coral-triangle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/coral-triangle\/","title":{"rendered":"Coral Triangle"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Coral Triangle Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Philippines is preparing to host Southeast Asia\u2019s first coral larvae cryobank which links research institutions in the Philippines, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand to create a network of cryobanks across the Coral Triangle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Coral Triangle<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is often referred to as <\/span><b>the \u2018Amazon of the seas\u2019,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a huge marine area spanning over 10 million square kilometres.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Countries of coral Triangle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It includes countries like <\/span><b>Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/about-solomon-islands\/\" target=\"_blank\">Solomon Islands<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Significance:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Triangle is home to more than <\/span><b>three-quarters of the world\u2019s coral species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a third of all reef fish, the vast mangrove forests, and six of the seven marine turtle species.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also sustains the <\/span><b>food security and livelihoods <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of more than 120 million people.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Threats:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growing carbon emissions, destructive fishing, air, water, and soil pollution, and the accelerating effects of climate change are all driving coral bleaching, habitat loss, and species decline.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>What are Corals?<\/b><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corals are essentially animals, which are sessile, meaning they permanently attach themselves to the ocean floor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corals share a <\/span><b>symbiotic relationship<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with single-celled <\/span><b>algae called zooxanthellae.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The algae provide the coral with food and nutrients, which they make through photosynthesis, using the sun\u2019s light.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They use their tiny tentacle-like hands to catch food from the water and sweep into their mouth.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each individual coral animal is known as a polyp and it lives in groups of hundreds to thousands of genetically identical polyps that form a \u2018colony\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/energy-and-environment\/philippines-pioneers-coral-larvae-cryobank-to-protect-threatened-reefs\/article70127637.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Coral Triangle includes countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Singapore, the Philippines, Timor-Leste, and the Solomon Islands.
