The plateau covers an area of 4,22,000 sq. km, which is about 43% of the Indian landmass. The plateau\u2019s name is anglicized from the Prakrit word called \u2018dakkhin\u2019, which comes from the Sanskrit word \u2018daksina\u2019, which means \u2018The South\u2019.
