


{"id":27692,"date":"2024-11-04T01:11:45","date_gmt":"2024-11-03T19:41:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27692"},"modified":"2025-04-08T11:36:18","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T06:06:18","slug":"global-tuberculosis-tb-report-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/global-tuberculosis-tb-report-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"Global tuberculosis (TB) Report 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Global TB Report:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an annual report published by the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/quest-upsc-notes\/world-health-organisation\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It provides a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the TB epidemic and of progress in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease at global, regional, and country levels.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Highlights of the 2024 Report:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>It shows <strong>8.2 million <\/strong>people were <strong>newly diagnosed with TB in 2023<\/strong>, a figure that represents the highest number of TB cases recorded by the WHO since it began global TB monitoring in 1995.<\/li>\n<li>It also marks a significant<strong> increase from the 7.5 million<\/strong> new TB cases <strong>reported in 2022.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Although the estimated <strong>number of 1.25 million TB deaths in 2023is down<\/strong> from the <strong>1.32 million<\/strong> recorded in 2022 and <strong>continues a declining trend from<\/strong> the height of the <strong>COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong>, that number still far surpasses the 320,000 COVID deaths officially reported to the WHO last year.<\/li>\n<li>The data show that <strong>30 mostly low- and middle-income countries<\/strong> (LMICs) bear <strong>87% of the global TB burden<\/strong>, with <strong>five countries<\/strong>\u2014<strong>India (26%), Indonesia (10%),China<\/strong> (6.8%), the <strong>Philippines<\/strong> (6.8%), and <strong>Pakistan<\/strong> (6.3%)\u2014combining for <strong>56%<\/strong> of the burden.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>55 percent<\/strong> of people who developed TB were <strong>men<\/strong>, <strong>33 percent were women,<\/strong> and 12 percent were children and young adolescents.<\/li>\n<li>According to the report, a significant number of new TB cases are driven by <strong>five major risk factors<\/strong>: <strong>undernutrition, HIV infection, alcohol use disorders, smoking, and diabetes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In 2023, India<\/strong> was estimated to have had <strong>27 lakh TB cases<\/strong>, of which <strong>25.1 lakh<\/strong> persons <strong>were diagnosed and put on treatment.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This has <strong>buoyed India&#8217;s treatment coverage to 89 percent in 2023<\/strong> from 72 percent in 2015, thereby bridging the gap of missing cases.<\/li>\n<li>It acknowledged a drop in <strong>India&#8217;s TB incidence &#8211; from 237 per lakh populationin2015, to 195 per lakh population in 2023,<\/strong> accounting for a 17.7 percent decline.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is Tuberculosis (TB)?<\/h3>\n<p>It is an infectious disease caused by bacteria that most often affects the lungs.
