


{"id":27716,"date":"2024-11-03T11:41:14","date_gmt":"2024-11-03T06:11:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27716"},"modified":"2025-04-08T11:46:44","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T06:16:44","slug":"kodo-millet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kodo-millet\/","title":{"rendered":"Kodo millet"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Kodo millet:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Kodo millet (Paspalum scrobiculatum) is also known as <strong>Kodra and Varagu in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is one of the \u201c<strong>hardiest crops, drought tolerant<\/strong> with high yield potential and excellent storage properties,\u201d It is rich in vitamins and minerals.<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>staple food for many tribal <\/strong>and economically weaker sections in India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Required climatic condition:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>tropical and subtropical<\/strong> regions are best suited for Kodo millet cultivation.<\/li>\n<li>It is grown on <strong>poor soils,<\/strong> and widely distributed in arid and semi-arid regions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The millet is <strong>believed to have originated in India and Madhya Pradesh<\/strong> is one of the largest producers of the crop, according to a 2020 research paper.<\/li>\n<li>Apart from MP, the millet is cultivated in <strong>Gujarat, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, and parts of Tamil Nadu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The crop is grown in India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and West Africa.<\/li>\n<li>According to the research paper, \u201c<strong>CPA (Cyclopiazonic acid)<\/strong> is one of the major mycotoxins associated with the kodo millet seeds causing kodo poisoning which was first recognised during the mid-eighties\u201d.\n<ul>\n<li>Kodo poisoning occurs mainly due to the consumption of kodo grains, when \u201cmaturing and harvesting if the grains had encountered with rainfall, resulting in a fungal infection leading to \u2018poisoned kodo\u2019 which is locally known as <strong>\u2018Matawna Kodoo\u2019 or \u2018Matona Kodo\u2019<\/strong> in northern India.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Kodo poisoning mainly affects the <strong>nervous and cardiovascular systems<\/strong> and the chief symptoms include \u201cvomiting, giddiness, and unconsciousness, small and rapid pulse, cold extremities, shaking of limbs and tremors.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are Millets?<\/h3>\n<p>Millets are a highly varied group of small-seeded grasses, widely grown around the world as cereal crops or grains for fodder and human food.
