{"id":27801,"date":"2025-12-30T10:05:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-30T04:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27801"},"modified":"2026-01-02T17:28:34","modified_gmt":"2026-01-02T11:58:34","slug":"spinal-muscular-atrophy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/spinal-muscular-atrophy\/","title":{"rendered":"Spinal Muscular Atrophy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Spinal Muscular Atrophy Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, Abu Dhabi\u2019s Sheikh Khalifa Medical City has become the first hospital globally to administer ITVISMA, a one-time gene therapy for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Spinal Muscular Atrophy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a rare and <\/span><b>progressive neuromuscular disorder <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that leads to muscle weakness and can cause life-threatening complications.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a debilitating genetic condition which <\/span><b>affects motor neurons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that control movement, and leads to progressive muscle weakening.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Cause:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Most forms of SMA are caused by <\/span><b>mutations of the survival motor neuron 1 gene<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SMN1) on the fifth chromosome, resulting in insufficient expression levels of the <\/span><b>SMN protein.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Types of SMA:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are five subtypes of <\/span><b>SMA- type 0, 1, 2, 3, 4.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Healthcare providers classify them based on the age of onset, as well as the severity and life expectancy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Symptoms of Spinal Muscular Atrophy<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Its symptoms vary and may be mild or disabling, but <\/span><b>involve a weakness<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the muscles that <\/span><b>control movement.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The weakness in SMA tends to be <\/span><b>more severe in the muscles<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are <\/span><b>close to the center of your body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than in the muscles farther away from your body\u2019s center.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Treatment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Unfortunately, <\/span><b>there isn\u2019t a cure for SMA<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
