{"id":2786,"date":"2025-10-07T11:14:34","date_gmt":"2025-10-07T05:44:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=2786"},"modified":"2025-10-07T15:49:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-07T10:19:07","slug":"what-is-new-start-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-new-start-treaty\/","title":{"rendered":"New START Treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>New START Treaty<\/b> <b>Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, US President Donald Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin&#8217;s idea of the New START Treaty was a good one.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About New START Treaty<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is known as The <\/span><b>New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (New START).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the last remaining nuclear arms deal between <\/span><b>Russia and the United States of America<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it was extended for <\/span><b>five years in 2021. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Extended the treaty till February 4 2026.)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Objective:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The New START caps the number of nuclear warheads well below <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/cold-war\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Cold War<\/strong><\/a> limits.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This treaty entered into <\/span><b>force on February 5, 2011<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The treaty concerns strategic weapons: usually <\/span><b>long-range weapons designed<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to influence the outcome of a war, not merely a battle, by destroying power centres, command and control facilities, or key infrastructure.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Timeline of Treaty<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was signed by then-presidents Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev in Prague in 2010; it came into force in 2011.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>New START<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> replaced the <\/span><b>1991 START I treaty,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which expired in December 2009, and superseded the 2002 <\/span><b>Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SORT), which terminated when New START entered into force.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Russia and the United States announced that they met New START limitations by Feb. 5, 2018.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/world\/trump-says-putins-offer-on-nuclear-arms-control-sounds-like-a-good-idea-10289653\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> IE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New START is a nuclear arms deal between Russia and the USA.
