{"id":27899,"date":"2025-10-27T03:03:35","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T21:33:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27899"},"modified":"2025-10-28T16:03:33","modified_gmt":"2025-10-28T10:33:33","slug":"asia-pacific-telecommunity-apt","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/asia-pacific-telecommunity-apt\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>APT is an <strong>intergovernmental organization<\/strong> established in February <strong>1979<\/strong> with the aim of <strong>promoting ICT development in the Asia-Pacific region.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>APT was founded on the joint initiatives of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-international-telecommunication-union-itu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>International Telecommunication Union<\/strong> (ITU)<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Currently, the APT has a strength of <strong>38 Members, 4 Associate Members<\/strong> and more than <strong>140 Affiliate Members<\/strong> (private companies and academia whose works are relevant to the ICT field).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Functions:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>APT fosters the <strong>development of telecommunication services<\/strong> and information infrastructure throughout the region.<\/li>\n<li>It plays a crucial role in coordinating and <strong>harmonizing policies, regulations<\/strong>, and <strong>technical standards<\/strong> related to ICT.<\/li>\n<li>APT <strong>conducts<\/strong> various <strong>preparatory activities for international conferences<\/strong>, including the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference (PP), World Radiocommunication Conferences (WRCs), World Telecommunication Standardization Assemblies (WTSAs), World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), and World Telecommunication Development Conferences (WTDCs).<\/li>\n<li>The organization also <strong>hosts working groups and forums to address<\/strong> specific issues such as <strong>spectrum management, policy, and standardization<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>APT also <strong>organizes<\/strong> a variety of <strong>capacity building programs<\/strong> related to ICT topics and <strong>implements several pilot projects<\/strong> to promote ICT development in the region.<\/li>\n<li>In addition, APT <strong>provides sub-regional platforms<\/strong> to facilitate achieving sub-regional common interests.<\/li>\n<li><strong>For example, the South Asian Telecommunication Regulators\u2019 Council (SATRC<\/strong>), under the umbrella of APT, <strong>organizes working groups for policy and regulation<\/strong>, and spectrum to facilitate harmonization among parties concerned.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>SATRC meeting<\/strong> is an <strong>annual event<\/strong> where <strong>heads of telecommunication regulatory bodies from SATRC member countries<\/strong> discuss and coordinate regulatory and other issues related to telecommunication and ICT.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>SATRC is composed of the heads of the regulatory bodies of <strong>nine South Asian countries,<\/strong> namely, <strong>Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Affiliate members from these countries are also taking active participation in SATRC activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)?<\/h3>\n<p>It is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies. It was established in 1865 as the International Telegraph Union. In 1947 the ITU became a specialized agency of the United Nations.
