{"id":27903,"date":"2024-11-12T09:24:19","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T03:54:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=27903"},"modified":"2025-04-08T15:15:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T09:45:51","slug":"toxic-epidermal-necrolysis-ten","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/toxic-epidermal-necrolysis-ten\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>TEN, also known as <strong>Lyell&#8217;s syndrome<\/strong>, is a rare, <strong>life-threatening skin condition<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>TEN is the most <strong>severe form of Stevens-Johnson syndrome<\/strong> (SJS).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Both conditions are <strong>caused by a reaction to medications<\/strong>-often antibiotics or anticonvulsives.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>People with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop SJS or TEN.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Symptoms may include:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>painful, red area<\/strong> that spreads quickly<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>skin may peel without blistering<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Raw areas of skin<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Discomfort<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fever<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Condition <strong>spread to eyes, mouth\/throat, and genitals<\/strong>\/urethra\/anus\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>TEN causes <strong>large areas of blistering and peeling skinon at least 30% of your body<\/strong>, including mucous membranes like the mouth, eyes and genitals.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Because the skin normally acts as a protective barrier, <strong>extensive skin damage <\/strong>can lead to a <strong>dangerous loss of fluids <\/strong>and allow <strong>infections to develop.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Serious complications<\/strong> can include <strong>pneumonia, <\/strong>overwhelming <strong>bacterial infections<\/strong> (sepsis), shock<strong>, multiple organ failure<\/strong>, and <strong>death<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It has a <strong>mortality rate <\/strong>of approximately <strong>30 percent.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Treatment<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>TEN requires <strong>emergency medical treatment at a hospital.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>If a <strong>medicine<\/strong> is causing the skin reaction, it <strong>is discontinued<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>While the skin heals, supportive care includes controlling pain, caring for wounds and making sure you&#8217;re getting enough fluids.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What are antibiotics?<\/h3>\n<p>Antibiotics are medicines that fight bacterial infections in people and animals.
