The site is about a 50-mile trip from Quito, a city situated in the <strong>high Andes of northern Ecuador.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It has been identified as <strong>endemic to <\/strong>the <strong>temperate, high-altitude Andean regions of<\/strong> the <strong>montane forest.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>named in honor of the local Otavalo culture,<\/strong> which is widely recognized for its musical heritage and skilled weaving and textile commerce.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>In comparison to related species, the Otavalos Andean mouse is <strong>slightly larger<\/strong>, with <strong>shorter hair on its back<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It has a coat of \u201cfine, dense, and soft\u201d fur.<\/li>\n<li>The fur on its back and sides is described as \u201cdark drab,\u201d while its sides show a more brownish tone.<\/li>\n<li>On its stomach, the fur is a lighter gray with a hint of \u201cground cinnamon,\u201d giving it a distinct color gradient across its body.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>most distinguishable feature<\/strong> of the new mouse species is its <strong>tail<\/strong>, which is <strong>longer than the length of the entire body<\/strong> combined.<\/li>\n<li>The tail is overall <strong>covered with fine hairs<\/strong> and a row of scales with a white tip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a caldera?<\/h3>\n<p>A caldera is a large depression formed when a volcano erupts and collapses. During a volcanic eruption, magma present in the magma chamber underneath the volcano is expelled, often forcefully. When the magma chamber empties, the support that the magma had provided inside the chamber disappears. As a result, the sides and top of the volcano collapse inward.
