{"id":28072,"date":"2024-11-18T12:17:56","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T06:47:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=28072"},"modified":"2025-10-11T12:54:01","modified_gmt":"2025-10-11T07:24:01","slug":"long-range-hypersonic-missile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/long-range-hypersonic-missile\/","title":{"rendered":"Long-Range Hypersonic Missile"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Long-Range Hypersonic Missile:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The missile can carry various payloads for\u00a0<strong>ranges greater than 1,500 km<\/strong>\u00a0for the Armed Forces.<\/li>\n<li>It has been\u00a0<strong>indigenously developed<\/strong>\u00a0by laboratories of the\u00a0<strong>Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Missile Complex, Hyderabad<\/strong>, along with various other DRDO labs and industry partners.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What are Hypersonic missiles?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The term \u201cHypersonic\u201d refers to a\u00a0<strong>speed at least five times<\/strong>\u00a0the speed of sound (also called Mach-5).<\/li>\n<li>Another key feature of such missiles is manoeuvrability, setting them apart from a ballistic missile that follows a set course or trajectory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hypersonic Cruise Missiles use scramjet engines<\/strong>\u00a0to sustain hypersonic speeds throughout their flight, flying at lower altitudes and also possessing manoeuvrability.<\/li>\n<li>The two types of hypersonic weapons systems are\u00a0<strong>Hypersonic Glide Vehicles<\/strong>\u00a0(HGV) and\u00a0<strong>Hypersonic Cruise Missiles.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The HGVs are launched from a rocket before gliding to the intended target while HCMs are powered by air-breathing high-speed engines or \u2018scramjets\u2019 after acquiring their target.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Advantages of hypersonic missiles<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Hypersonic weapons can\u00a0<strong>enable responsive, long-range strike<\/strong>\u00a0options against distant, defended or time-critical threats (such as road-mobile missiles) when other forces are unavailable, denied access or not preferred.<\/li>\n<li>Conventional hypersonic\u00a0<strong>weapons use only kinetic energy<\/strong>, i.e. energy derived from motion, to destroy unhardened targets or even underground facilities.<\/li>\n<li>They\u00a0<strong>fly at lower altitudes than ballistic missiles<\/strong>, which means that they may be harder to track at long distances with some surface-based sensors, such as certain radar<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Russia and China are believed to be ahead in developing hypersonic missiles while the US is developing a range of such weapons under an ambitious programme.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What are Ballistic Missiles?<\/h3>\n<p>A\u00a0ballistic missile\u00a0is a rocket-propelled, self-guided strategic-weapons system that follows a ballistic trajectory to deliver a payload from its launch site to a predetermined target.
