South Island was much more sparsely settled.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Culturally<\/strong>, they are <strong>Polynesians<\/strong>, most closely related to eastern Polynesians.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Maori culture has endured centuries of torture and struggle, first in the hands of the \u2018Crown\u2019, and later others who wished to claim a spot on their land.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Language<\/strong>: Maori is classified as part of the <strong>Polynesian Group of the Eastern Oceanic Branch of the Austronesian languages<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Approximately <strong>one-third<\/strong> of the Maori <strong>still speak<\/strong> their ancestral language, with the vast <strong>majority fluent in English as well.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>According to data from the 2013 census, there were <strong>598,605 M\u0101ori<\/strong> in the country, making up <strong>14.9 percent of the total population<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Their <strong>distinctive costumes<\/strong> serve as a visual expression of their heritage, reflecting their deep connection to the land and ancestral spirits.<\/li>\n<li>The most <strong>famous aspect<\/strong> of the Maori culture is the <strong>Haka<\/strong>, a <strong>powerful war dance<\/strong> known for its intensity, facial expressions, and rhythm.<\/li>\n<li>Another very <strong>prominent identity<\/strong> of the Maori people <strong>are their tattoos,<\/strong> which can be seen on their faces.\n<ul>\n<li>These tattoos are <strong>called \u2018ta moko\u2019<\/strong> which is a <strong>traditional Maori art form<\/strong>, deeply symbolic and respected.<\/li>\n<li>Ta <strong>moko designs are unique to each person<\/strong> and are a depiction of their social status, their genealogy, what they have done for society, and more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is Polynesia?<\/h3>\n<p>Polynesia\u2014from the Greek for &#8220;many islands&#8221;\u2014is a collection of over 1,000 islands strewn over a broad region of the Pacific Ocean known as the Polynesian triangle.
