However, only since the mid-20th century has it assumed commercial importance.<\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>two main types<\/strong> of aquacultures\u2014<strong>marine and freshwater.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Aquaculture can <strong>happen all over the world<\/strong>: in <strong>coastal ocean waters<\/strong>, <strong>fresh water ponds and rivers<\/strong>, and even<strong> on land in tanks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>one of the fastest-growing forms of food production<\/strong> in the world.\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Globally<\/strong>, aquaculture already <strong>supplies more than half of all seafood consumed by humans.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>More than 550 aquatic species are farmed via aquaculture.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>top <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/new-fish-species\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>fish species<\/strong><\/a> include <strong>carp, catfish, salmon, and tilapia<\/strong>; commonly farmed shellfish include <strong>shrimp, oysters, clams<\/strong>, <strong>mussels<\/strong>, and scallops.<\/li>\n<li>Newer to marine farming are various species of seaweed, which total 27% of annual global aquaculture tonnage.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Major Producers:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>China<\/strong> is firmly at the top of the global aquaculture production, producing nearly <strong>60% of farmed seafood<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Other leaders include <strong>Indonesia, India, and Vietnam<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)?<\/h3>\n<p>It is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. It is the oldest permanent specialized agency of the UN, established in October 1945. Its mandate is to improve nutrition, increase agricultural productivity, raise the standard of living in rural populations, and contribute to global economic growth.
