{"id":28174,"date":"2025-12-03T11:11:23","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T05:41:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=28174"},"modified":"2025-12-03T13:16:56","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T07:46:56","slug":"cold-wave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/cold-wave\/","title":{"rendered":"Cold Wave"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Cold Wave Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Higher than normal cold wave days are expected to impact parts of central India as well as some regions in northwest and northeast India, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Cold Wave<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold waves are u<\/span><b>nusual weather occurrences<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by <\/span><b>extremely low temperatures in the near-surface atmosphere.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their <\/span><b>duration <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can r<\/span><b>ange from several days to a few weeks,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contingent upon the geography and climatic conditions of the region.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The India Meteorological Department (<\/span><b>IMD) defines a cold wave as a rapid fall in temperature within 24 hours.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is distinguished by a <\/span><b>marked cooling of the air,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or with the <\/span><b>invasion of very cold air, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over a large area.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>As per IMD,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a <\/span><b>cold wave<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is considered when the <\/span><b>minimum temperature of a station is 10\u00b0C or less for plains and 0\u00b0C or less for hilly regions.\u00a0<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>A cold wave and severe cold wave <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is considered a n<\/span><b>egative departure from normal i.e., 4.5\u00b0C to 6.4\u00b0C and more than 6.4\u00b0C in hill stations,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> respectively.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, the <\/span><b>departure in minimum temperature of \u2264 04\u00b0C and \u2264 02\u00b0C for plains <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is considered a cold wave and severe cold wave, respectively.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cold waves are <\/span><b>predominantly experienced <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during the period <\/span><b>December-February, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when minimum temperatures drop to very low levels, <\/span><b>especially over the northern parts of India.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Health Risks:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure to extreme cold can lead to <\/span><b>frostbite<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>hypothermia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and other cold-related illnesses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Non-freezing cold injuries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as <\/span><b>Immersion Foot<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014caused by prolonged exposure to cold, wet conditions\u2014are also a risk.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In extreme cases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, cold exposure may result in <\/span><b>fatalities <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if adequate precautions are not taken.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hindustantimes.com\/india-news\/expect-a-chilly-winter-higher-than-normal-cold-wave-days-imd-101764595127853.html#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">HT<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cold waves are unusual weather occurrences caused by extremely low temperatures in the near-surface atmosphere.
