{"id":28204,"date":"2024-11-24T06:54:29","date_gmt":"2024-11-24T01:24:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=28204"},"modified":"2025-04-08T17:32:03","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T12:02:03","slug":"minke-whales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/minke-whales\/","title":{"rendered":"Minke whales"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Minke whales:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>They are members of the <strong>baleen or \u201cgreat\u201d whale<\/strong> family and are the smallest of the rorquals.<\/li>\n<li>There are two recognized species of minke whales with partially overlapping ranges\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Common minke whale<\/strong> (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), and the <strong>Antarctic minke whale<\/strong> (B. bonaerensis).\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Dwarf minke whales are an unnamed subspecies of the common minke whale that occurs almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>In addition the North Atlantic and North Pacific common minke whales also have separate sub-species designations (B. a. acutorostrata in the North Atlantic and B. a. scammoni in the North Pacific).\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distribution:<\/strong> Minke whales are widely distributed through <strong>most tropical, temperate and polar regions <\/strong>from approximately 65\u00b0S to 80\u00b0N.<\/li>\n<li>Common minke whales are found in all ocean basins, with the dwarf minke whale subspecies more or less limited to the Southern Hemisphere.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>They feed most often in cooler waters at higher latitudes and can be found in both coastal\/inshore and oceanic\/offshore areas.<\/li>\n<li><strong>IUCN Conservation status<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Common minke whale<\/strong>: Least concern<\/li>\n<li><strong>Antarctic minke whale<\/strong> : Data deficient<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the International Whaling Commission?<\/h3>\n<p>It was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (ICRW) which was signed in Washington DC in 1946.
