{"id":28462,"date":"2025-10-27T10:21:51","date_gmt":"2025-10-27T04:51:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=28462"},"modified":"2025-10-29T11:42:17","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T06:12:17","slug":"world-drought-atlas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/world-drought-atlas\/","title":{"rendered":"World Drought Atlas"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About World Drought Atlas:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was launched by the <strong>United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification<\/strong> (UNCCD) in collaboration with the European<strong> Commission Joint Research Centre.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It explains how worsening <strong>drought risks are linked to human activities<\/strong> and then delves into the impacts of drought in five key areas\u2014water supply, agriculture, hydropower, inland navigation, and ecosystems.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It features 21 case studies from around the world, underscoring that no country\u2014whatever its size, <a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/gross-domestic-product-gdp\/\" target=\"_blank\">GDP,<\/a> or latitude\u2014is immune to drought and all can better prepare for it.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It describes concrete measures and pathways to <strong>manage, reduce, and adapt to systemic drought risks<\/strong>; underscores the co-benefits of these actions for different sectors; and showcases best practices from different regions.<\/li>\n<li>The measures highlighted in the Atlas fall into three categories:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Governance<\/strong> (e.g. early warning systems, microinsurance for smallholder farmers, pricing schemes for water usage);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Land-use management<\/strong> (e.g. land restoration and agroforestry);<\/li>\n<li><strong>Management of water supply and use<\/strong> (e.g. wastewater reuse, managed groundwater recharge and conservation.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: What is the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification?<\/h3>\n<p>It is the only legally binding international agreement linking environment and development to sustainable land management.
