(CMFRI) to enhance stock of short-neck clam (Paphia malabarica) programme in Ashtamudi Lake is showing early signs of recovery.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Short Neck Clam<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a valuable <\/span><b>bivalve mollusk.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is India\u2019s first <\/span><b>Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fisheries.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is the major fishery resource of the brackish water <\/span><b>Ashtamudi Lake<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Kerala, India.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Reasons for its decline:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Environmental pollution, invasion of <\/span><b>non-native species like the Charru mussel,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> climate change, including altered salinity and water temperature, have significantly reduced the clam population.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Features of Short Neck Clam<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Growth:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is a <\/span><b>fast-growing species<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a peak spawning season of December to February and has a maximum <\/span><b>lifespan of around 3 years.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Maturity:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It attains sexual maturity in its first year at a shell length of 30 mm.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Economic Significance of Short Neck Clam<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is used in cement production and to make <\/span><b>carbide for use in welding.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clams are bought by a local factory, heat-treated, frozen and sold on to retailers and restaurants, with around 80% being exported to Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The clam shell is used as the raw material for the manufacture of <\/span><b>cement, calcium carbide and sand lime bricks.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are also used for lime burning for construction, in paddy fields and fish farms for neutralizing acid soil and as slaked
