{"id":2887,"date":"2023-02-21T09:50:32","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T04:20:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=2887"},"modified":"2025-03-26T08:57:47","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T03:27:47","slug":"bokang-baling-hydroelectric-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/bokang-baling-hydroelectric-project\/","title":{"rendered":"Bokang-Baling Hydroelectric Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Bokang-Baling Hydroelectric Project:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>proposed hydroelectric project<\/strong> on <strong>river Dhauliganga<\/strong> in the <strong>Pithoragarh<\/strong> <strong>district<\/strong> in <strong>Uttarakhand<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It has a proposed <strong>installed capacity of 165 MW<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The project involves the <strong>construction of a concrete gravity dam of 65 m<\/strong> from river bed level and <strong>an underground Power House<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The project is being <strong>implemented by THDC India Limited<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Dhauliganga River:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Origin<\/strong>: It <strong>rises<\/strong> in the vicinity of the <strong>Niti Pass<\/strong> in the <strong>border regions<\/strong> between Garhwal region of <strong>Uttarakhand and southwestern Tibet.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is one of the <strong>important tributaries of Alaknanda<\/strong>, the other being the Nandakini, Pindar, Mandakini, and Bhagirathi.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>meets the Alaknanda River<\/strong> (the major source stream of the Ganges river) <strong>at Vishnuprayag<\/strong> in Uttarakhand.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Length<\/strong>: The length of this river is about <strong>94 km<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tapovan<\/strong>, which is <strong>famous for its hot springs<\/strong>, is <strong>located on the banks<\/strong> of Dhauliganga.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>THDC India Limited:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>THDC India Limited (Formerly Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited) is a company <strong>jointly owned by the Government of India and the Government of Uttar Pradesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was <strong>registered as a Public Limited Company<\/strong> in 1988 under the <strong>Companies Act 1956<\/strong> <strong>to operate<\/strong> and maintain the <strong>Tehri Hydro Power Complex<\/strong> and other Hydro Projects.<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>Mini Ratna Category-I Enterprise<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>What is a Concrete Gravity dam?<\/h3>\n<p>A Concrete Gravity Dam is also known as \u201cGravity Arch Dam,\u201d and is a freshwater-retaining concrete structure that has a wider footing (base) than the top-section. The purpose of a Concrete Gravity Dam is to maintain a low center of gravity, in order to avoid collapsing in the event of an abutment seal failure.
