


{"id":29114,"date":"2025-01-02T09:00:05","date_gmt":"2025-01-02T03:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=29114"},"modified":"2025-04-09T00:37:37","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T19:07:37","slug":"central-groundwater-board-cgwb-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/central-groundwater-board-cgwb-2\/","title":{"rendered":"What is the Central Groundwater Board (CGWB)?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Central Groundwater Board (CGWB):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>CGWB is a <strong>multi-disciplinary scientific organization<\/strong> of the <strong>Department of Water Resources,<\/strong> River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, <strong>Ministry of Jal Shakti, <\/strong>Government of India.<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>National Apex Agency<\/strong> entrusted with the responsibilities of <strong>providing scientific inputs for management<\/strong>, <strong>exploration, monitoring<\/strong>, assessment, augmentation, and <strong>regulation of groundwater resources<\/strong> of the country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mandate<\/strong>: Develop and disseminate technologies and monitor and implement national policies for the scientific and sustainable development and management of India\u2019s groundwater resources, including their exploration, assessment, conservation, augmentation, protection from pollution, and distribution, based on principles of economic and ecological efficiency and equity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Organization Setup:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The Board is <strong>headed by the Chairman<\/strong> and <strong>has five members<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>CGWB is a multi-disciplinary scientific organization consisting of <strong>Hydrogeologists, Geophysicists, Chemists, Hydrologists, Hydrometeorologists, <\/strong>and <strong>Engineers<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarters<\/strong>: Bhujal Bhawan, <strong>Faridabad, Haryana<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>major activities<\/strong> of the CGWB are:\u00a0\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National Aquifer mapping and Management (NAQUIM)<\/strong> involving Preparation of Aquifer Maps and Management Plans.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Groundwater explorations<\/strong> to delineate groundwater worthy areas and potential aquifers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Geophysical surveys<\/strong> to delineate groundwater bearing zones, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Periodic <strong>assessment<\/strong> of the country\u2019s groundwater resources.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Monitoring of groundwater levels and quality<\/strong> through groundwater observation wells.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Dissemination of Ground Water Data<\/strong> and knowledge.<\/li>\n<li>Groundwater modelling.<\/li>\n<li>GIS and Remote sensing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Regulation and control of groundwater development<\/strong> and management by CGWA in <strong>coordination with State Government<\/strong> Organizations.<\/li>\n<li>Coordination with State Government with a view to <strong>establish benchmark methodologies<\/strong> for groundwater studies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>R&amp;D studies<\/strong> in ground water sector and application and operationalization of new technologies\/techniques for groundwater investigation, development, and management.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Water conservation and artificial recharge<\/strong> to groundwater.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Capacity building<\/strong> and knowledge transfer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is an aquifer?<\/h3>\n<p>An aquifer is a body of porous rock or sediment saturated with groundwater. Groundwater enters an aquifer as precipitation seeps through the soil.
