{"id":29230,"date":"2025-01-07T12:51:46","date_gmt":"2025-01-07T07:21:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=29230"},"modified":"2025-04-09T01:30:18","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T20:00:18","slug":"tidal-tails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/tidal-tails\/","title":{"rendered":"What are Tidal Tails?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Tidal Tail:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Tidal tails are <strong>thin, elongated regions of stars and interstellar gas extending into space.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They are typically <strong>formed when galaxies undergo close encounters or mergers<\/strong>, causing their <strong>mutual gravitational forces to distort and stretch out material<\/strong> from their outer regions.\n<ul>\n<li>During the interaction, <strong>gas and stars <\/strong>are often<strong> stripped from the outer regions <\/strong>of the galaxies to<strong> form two tidal tails<\/strong>: <strong>one trailing and one preceding each galaxy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These tails can <strong>persist long after the galaxies have finally merged<\/strong> and are therefore considered a <strong>signature of recent merger activity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Examples of galaxies with tidal tails include the Tadpole Galaxy and the Mice Galaxies.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tidal forcescan eject a significant amount of a galaxy&#8217;s gas into the tail.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Within those galaxies which have tidal tails, approximately 10% of the galaxy&#8217;s stellar formation takes place in the tail.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Overall, roughly <strong>1% of all stellar formation<\/strong> in the known universe <strong>occurs within tidal tails.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Studying tidal tails helps astronomers understand how galaxies interact, merge, and evolve over cosmic time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1<\/strong>: What is a Galaxy?<\/h3>\n<p>A galaxy is any of the systems of stars and interstellar matter that make up the universe. Many such assemblages are so enormous that they contain hundreds of billions of stars.
