{"id":29336,"date":"2026-10-05T11:59:18","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T06:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=29336"},"modified":"2026-10-05T12:36:05","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T07:06:05","slug":"desert-national-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/desert-national-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Desert National Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Desert National Park Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a major milestone for the conservation of the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard (GIB), the Union Environment Minister released two captive-bred male GIBs into the wild at Sam in the Desert National Park, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Desert National Park<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Location:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It is located <\/span><b>in the Thar Desert near<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the town of Jaisalmer, <\/span><b>in Rajasthan.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is one of the <\/span><b>largest national parks in the country<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, covering an area of over 3160 sq. km.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Topography: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The substantial part of the park is on a landscape, which comprises a lakebed<\/span><b> of extinct salt lakes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>thorny scrub<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a considerable area consists of <\/span><b>sand dunes.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Climate:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The area falls in the extreme <\/span><b>hot and arid region of the very low rainfall zone<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (&lt;100mm) of the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the most interesting features of this park is the presence of <\/span><b>fossils from the Jurassic Period.<\/b><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Vegetation<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vegetation of a major part of the arid region of the Thar falls under the <\/span><b>thorn forest type.<\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vegetation is quite sparse with <\/span><b>open grassland, thorny bushes, plantations<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and dunes as the broad habitat types.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Lakes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> There are three main lakes in this Park- <\/span><b>Rajbaugh Lake, Malik Talao Lake and Padam Talao.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Flora:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The rich flora of the park consists of dhok, ronj, salai and palm trees. The vegetation is sparce, and patches of <\/span><b>sewan grass and aak shrub<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be seen.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Khejri (Prosopis cineraria)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is commonly found, which is revered and protected by the local communities, especially the \u2018Bishnois\u2019.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Fauna:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Blackbuck, <\/span><b>Chinkara,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Desert fox, Bengal Fox, Indian Wolf, Desert Cat, Hare etc. Reptiles are also found in abundance and they include spiny \u2013tailed lizard, monitor lizard, <\/span><b>saw scaled-viper, Russel viper<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> , Karit.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gib-upsc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Great<\/a><\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/gib-upsc\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Indian Bustard<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is one <\/span><b>magnificent bird found<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in relatively fair numbers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source: <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pib.gov.in\/PressReleaseDetail.aspx?PRID=2318842&amp;reg=3&amp;lang=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PIB<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Desert National Park is located in the Thar Desert near the town of Jaisalmer, in Rajasthan.
