


{"id":29336,"date":"2025-01-11T08:59:18","date_gmt":"2025-01-11T03:29:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=29336"},"modified":"2025-04-09T02:18:51","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T20:48:51","slug":"desert-national-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/desert-national-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Desert National Park (DNP)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Desert National Park (DNP):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is located in the <strong>Thar Desert near<\/strong> the town of <strong>Jaisalmer, in Rajasthan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>one of the largest national parks<\/strong> in the country, covering an area of over 3160 sq. km.<\/li>\n<li>The area falls in the <strong>extreme hot and arid region of the very low rainfall zone<\/strong> (&lt;100mm) of the country.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Topography<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The Park forms a vast, <strong>sandy, and undulating terrain<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>major landform<\/strong> consists of <strong>craggy rocks and compact Salt Lake bottoms<\/strong>, inters medial areas, and <strong>fixed dunes<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sand dunes<\/strong> form around <strong>20% of the park<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>three main lakes<\/strong> in this sanctuary: <strong>Rajbaugh Lake, Malik Talao Lake, and Padam Talao.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>One of the most interesting features of the DNP is the <strong>presence of fossils from the Jurassic Period.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The vegetation of a major part of the arid region of the Thar falls under the <strong>thorn forest type<\/strong> (Champion and Seth 1968).<\/li>\n<li>The vegetation is <strong>quite sparse with open grassland, thorny bushes, plantations and dunes<\/strong> as the broad habitat types.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>It consists of <strong>dhok, ronj, salai, and palm trees<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Khejri (Prosopis cineraria) is commonly found<\/strong>, which is <strong>revered and protected by <\/strong>the <strong>local communities, especially the &#8216;Bishnois&#8217;.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>The wildlife of the DNP includes <strong>Chinkara<\/strong>, <strong>Desert fox, Bengal Fox<\/strong>, Indian Wolf, Desert Cat, Hare, etc.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>endangered Great Indian Bustard<\/strong> is one magnificent bird found in relatively fair numbers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reptiles<\/strong> are also found in abundance, and they include the spiny \u2013tailed lizard, <strong>monitor lizard, saw scaled-viper, Russel viper<\/strong>, and Karit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1: What is the Great Indian Bustard?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It is a bustard found on the Indian subcontinent. It is among the heaviest of the flying birds. The species has a current viable population of 100- 150 individuals in India and mainly survives in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan that holds about 100 individuals. It is a large bird with a horizontal body and long, bare legs, giving it an ostrich-like appearance.
