


{"id":29364,"date":"2025-01-12T10:16:00","date_gmt":"2025-01-12T04:46:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=29364"},"modified":"2025-04-09T02:31:35","modified_gmt":"2025-04-08T21:01:35","slug":"utricularia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/utricularia\/","title":{"rendered":"What is Utricularia?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Utricularia:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Utricularia (bladderwort) is a <strong>genus of carnivorous plants<\/strong> in the family Lentibulariaceae.<\/li>\n<li>Currently, 220 listed species occupying temperate and tropical<strong> habitats throughout the world;<\/strong> it is the <strong>most diverse and widespread genus of carnivorous plants<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>characterized by small hollow sacs<\/strong> that <strong>actively capture and digest tiny animals<\/strong> such as insect larvae, aquatic worms, and water fleas.<\/li>\n<li>Bladderworts can be <strong>found in lakes, streams, and waterlogged soils<\/strong> around the world, and <strong>several are invasive species<\/strong> that have spread to novel habitats.<\/li>\n<li>Bladderwort plants <strong>lack roots<\/strong> and <strong>usually have a horizontal floating stem<\/strong> bearing simple or divided leaves.<\/li>\n<li>Small carnivorous <strong>bladders are produced along the stem <\/strong>can range from dark to transparent in color.<\/li>\n<li>Bladderworts <strong>trap small organisms in their tiny bladders,<\/strong> which <strong>have a trap door<\/strong> that is <strong>triggered by hairs on the door<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>When prey comes in contact with the hairs, the door opens in a millisecond, sucking the animal in and closing in about 2.5 milliseconds.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The flowers are bisexual and bilaterally symmetrical.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Facts about Keoladeo National Park:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Keoladeo National Park, <strong>formerly known as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, is located in the eastern<\/strong> part of Rajasthan.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Declared a national park in 1981, it was <strong>renamed Keoladeo for the ancient temple<\/strong> in the park dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is strategically located in the <strong>middle of the Central Asian migratory flyway.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is spread across 2,873 hectares of woodlands, grasslands, wetlands, and woodland swamps.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vegetation<\/strong>: The vegetation here is of a <strong>dry deciduous type, w<\/strong>ith medium-sized trees and shrubs found inside its forest.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora<\/strong>: Some of the trees which can be commonly spotted inside the park are <strong>kadam, jamun, babul, kandi, ber,<\/strong> kair, and piloo.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Keoladeo is home to more than <strong>360 species of permanent and migratory birds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>During the <strong>annual period of migratory visitors<\/strong> (about October to March), birds from throughout the world can be found in the park.<\/li>\n<li>Among those wintering in the park are <strong>waterfowl<\/strong> from Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, China, and Siberia, including species such as <strong>gadwalls, shovellers<\/strong>, common teals, tufted ducks, <strong>pintails<\/strong>, <strong>white spoonbills<\/strong>, Asian open-billed storks, Oriental ibises, and the <strong>rare (possibly extinct) Siberian crane.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The park is also home to a range of mammals and reptiles\u2014including pythons and other snakes, deer, sambars, blackbucks, jackals, monitor lizards, and fishing cats\u2014as well as some 50 species of fish and 25 species of butterflies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It is a <strong>Ramsar site and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><strong>Q1: What are the benefits of Utricularia?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The dried leaves are used to make medicinal tea.
