{"id":29419,"date":"2025-10-19T13:00:30","date_gmt":"2025-10-19T07:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=29419"},"modified":"2025-10-24T17:42:45","modified_gmt":"2025-10-24T12:12:45","slug":"zombie-deer-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/zombie-deer-disease\/","title":{"rendered":"Zombie Deer Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Zombie Deer Disease Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health officials in Florida recently have confirmed cases of Chronic Wasting Disease, commonly known as \u201cZombie Deer Disease.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Zombie Deer Disease<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Known scientifically as <\/span><b>Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it is a <\/span><b>progressive and fatal neurological disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which <\/span><b>primarily affects deer, elk, moose, and reindeer.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>affects the<\/b> <b>central nervous system <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(the brain and the spinal cord).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>What causes CWD?<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CWD is caused by <\/span><b>infectious proteins called prions.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prions are unique in that they <\/span><b>don\u2019t contain DNA or RNA,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> unlike bacteria or viruses.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, they are <\/span><b>misfolded proteins <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that <\/span><b>cause other proteins in the brain to likewise misfold,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ultimately leading to <\/span><b>brain damage.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once these proteins accumulate in the brain, they create spongy holes in the tissue, resulting in severe neurological dysfunction.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Transmission:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>CWD prions are highly contagious <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><b>spread through body fluids<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as saliva, feces, blood, or urine, either by <\/span><b>direct contact or environmental contamination.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Once present <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in an area, prions <\/span><b>remain infectious in soil, water, and plants for years,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posing long-term risks to animal populations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Symptoms:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has an <\/span><b>extended incubation period averaging 18\u201324 months<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between infection and the onset of noticeable signs. During this time frame, animals look and act normal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most obvious sign of CWD is <\/span><b>progressive weight loss.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Numerous <\/span><b>behavioral changes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have also been reported, including decreased social interaction, loss of awareness, and loss of fear of humans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diseased animals also may exhibit increased drinking, urination, and excessive salivation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>In the final stages <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of disease, <\/span><b>animals become debilitated and ultimately die.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How fast CWD progresses depends on the species and the animal&#8217;s genetics.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Treatment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is <\/span><b>always fatal <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in infected animals.
