{"id":29486,"date":"2025-01-17T09:56:12","date_gmt":"2025-01-17T04:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=29486"},"modified":"2025-04-09T08:28:54","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T02:58:54","slug":"siachen-glacier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/siachen-glacier\/","title":{"rendered":"Siachen Glacier"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Siachen Glacier:\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>piedmont glacier<\/strong> located in the <strong>Karakoram Range.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It lies in the heavily glaciated Himalayan <strong>region known as the \u201cThird Pole,\u201d<\/strong> because mountain glaciers in this region contain more freshwater than is found anywhere else on Earth except for the polar ice caps.<\/li>\n<li>It lies between the <strong>Saltoro Ridge<\/strong>, a subrange of the Karakorams, to the west and the main Karakoram Range to <strong>the east.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>second longest nonpolar glacier<\/strong> in the world, after <strong>Fedchenko Glacier<\/strong> in <strong>Tajikistan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It originates at the <strong>base of the Indira Col West<\/strong>, a col (low point) on the Indira Ridge.<\/li>\n<li>It is located so strategically that while it <strong>dominates Shaksgam Valley<\/strong> (ceded to China by Pakistan in 1963) in <strong>the north,<\/strong> controls the routes coming from Gilgit Baltistan to Leh from the west, and at the same time, it dominates the <strong>ancient Karakoram Pass<\/strong> in the eastern side too.<\/li>\n<li>It is the <strong>major source<\/strong> of the 80km long <strong>Nubra River,<\/strong> a major tributary of the Shyok River.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>It is considered the <strong>world\u2019s highest battleground<\/strong> and in 1984 India took its control from Pakistan under <strong>Operation Meghadoot.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1: Why is Siachen so important for India?<\/h3>\n<p>It is important to India because of its Strategic location. Saltoro Ridge in the Siachen glacier acts as a division that averts the linkage of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir with China directly, prohibiting the two from developing geographical military alliances.
