text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Australopithecus, (genus Australopithecus) is a group of <\/span><b>extinct primates<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> known from a series of <\/span><b>fossils found <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at numerous sites in <\/span><b>eastern, north-central, and southern Africa.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are the <\/span><b>closest known relatives of our genus, Homo.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The various species of Australopithecus lived <\/span><b>4.4 million to 1.4 million years ago<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (mya), during the <\/span><b>Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which lasted from 5.3 million to 11,700 years ago).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>genus name, meaning \u201csouthern ape<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d refers to the first fossils found, which were discovered in South Africa.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the <\/span><b>most famous specimen of Australopithecus is \u201cLucy,\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a remarkably preserved fossilized skeleton from <\/span><b>Ethiopia <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that has been dated to 3.2 mya.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Australopithecus <\/b><b>Features<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members of Australopithecus bore a <\/span><b>combination of humanlike and apelike traits.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They had <\/span><b>apelike face proportions <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(a flat nose, a strongly projecting lower jaw) and <\/span><b>braincase <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(with a <\/span><b>small brain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, usually less than 500 cubic centimeters \u2013 about <\/span><b>1\/3 the size of a modern human brain<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and <\/span><b>long, strong arms <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with curved fingers adapted for climbing trees.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also had<\/span><b> small canine teeth<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like all other early humans, and a <\/span><b>body that stood on two legs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and regularly <\/span><b>walked upright.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They were roughly 1.2-1.5 m tall and probably weighed about 30-50 kg.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Males were almost <\/span><b>twice the size of females<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a level of difference, or <\/span><b>sexual dimorphism<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, greater than modern chimpanzees or humans but less than gorillas or orangutans.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;
