{"id":29595,"date":"2026-08-05T10:43:48","date_gmt":"2026-08-05T05:13:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=29595"},"modified":"2026-08-05T15:12:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-05T09:42:15","slug":"asan-conservation-reserve-acr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/asan-conservation-reserve-acr\/","title":{"rendered":"Asan Conservation Reserve"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Asan Conservation Reserve Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court recently clarified that a direction banning mining activities within a 10 km radius of the Asan wetland conservation reserve, a Ramsar site in Uttarakhand, would apply to other wetland conservation reserves across the country for the sake of parity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Asan Conservation Reserve<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located in the <\/span><b>Dehradun district <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of <\/span><b>Uttarakhand<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanning 444.4 ha, it is situated at the<\/span><b> confluence of the Asan and Yamuna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Asan River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>unlike other rivers<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which flow north to south, <\/span><b>flows in a west to east direction.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reserve <\/span><b>comprises the Asan Barrage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the<\/span><b> wetland formed by damming the Asan River <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in 1967.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>barrage created a freshwater reservoir <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with habitats ideal for migratory and resident birds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>declared <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a <\/span><b>Conservation Reserve in 2005 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">under Section 36A of the <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/wildlife-protection-act\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972<\/a>.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was declared a Ramsar site in 2020. It is the <\/span><b>first Ramsar site in Uttarakhand.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also listed as an<\/span><b> Important Bird Area<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BNHS and BirdLife International) and is popular for sightings of native and migratory birds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This biodiverse wetland lies strategically <\/span><b>along the Central Asian Flyway,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> serving as a critical habitat for numerous migratory and resident species.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is home to 330 species of birds, including <\/span><b>critically endangered-white-rumped vulture, Baer\u2019s pochard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">;<\/span><b> endangered-Egyptian vulture, steppe eagle, black-bellied tern;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and vulnerable-marbled teal, common pochard, Indian spotted eagle, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wetland is especially known for hosting <\/span><b>large flocks of ruddy shelduck during winter.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond avifauna, the reserve supports a rich biological diversity with 78 invertebrate species, 49 fish species, 4 amphibians, 1 reptile, and 20 mammal species.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the fish, the<\/span><b> endangered golden mahseer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Tor putitora) is particularly significant, as the wetland functions as an important feeding, migration, and spawning site. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News<\/b><strong>: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/supreme-court-says-10-km-radius-buffer-for-mining-extends-to-all-wetland-reserves\/article71304647.ece\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>TH<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Asan Conservation Reserve is located in the Dehradun district of Uttarakhand at the confluence of the Asan and Yamuna Rivers.
