{"id":29714,"date":"2026-07-11T12:14:57","date_gmt":"2026-07-11T06:44:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=29714"},"modified":"2026-07-11T13:58:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-11T08:28:43","slug":"sharavathy-lion-tailed-macaque-sanctuary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/sharavathy-lion-tailed-macaque-sanctuary\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharavathi Lion-Tailed Macaque Sanctuary"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Sharavathi Lion-Tailed Macaque Sanctuary Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change expert committee on the proposal for diversion of forest and non-forest land from the Sharavathi Valley Lion-Tailed Macaque Wildlife Sanctuary and its eco-sensitive zone has strongly recommended against approving the proposed 2000 MW Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sharavathi Lion-Tailed Macaque Sanctuary<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is located in Shimoga District in <\/span><b>Karnataka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It lies in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/difference-between-western-ghats-and-eastern-ghats\/\" target=\"_blank\"><b>Western Ghats<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was formed by <\/span><b>combining <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the existing <\/span><b>Sharavathi Valley Wildlife Sanctuary, Aghanashini Lion-Tailed Macaque Conservation Reserve,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the adjoining reserve forest blocks.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary shares its <\/span><b>southwestern boundary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the <\/span><b>Mookambika Wildlife Sanctuary.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sanctuary is <\/span><b>nourished by the Sharavathi River. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Linganamakki reservoir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> spread over an area of 128.7 kms, is a part of this sanctuary.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Terrain: The overall terrain of the sanctuary is highly undulating, with altitude ranging from 94 m to 1102 m.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The spectacular <\/span><b>Jog Falls, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where water <\/span><b>from the Sharavathi River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> falls from a height of almost 300 m, is present on the<\/span><b> northern boundary<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the sanctuary.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Vegetation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It mainly consists o<\/span><b>f tropical evergreen to semi-evergreen <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">types of forests, <\/span><b>moist deciduous forests, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and grasslands and savanna.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Flora<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: The sanctuary is immensely rich in species like <\/span><b>Dhoopa, Gulmavu, Surahonne, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mavu, Nandi, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Fauna<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is home to the <\/span><b>endangered lion-tailed macaque <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Macaca silenus),<\/span><b> tiger, leopard, wild dog, jackal, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sloth bear, spotted deer, sambar, barking deer, mouse deer, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is home to approximately 700 <\/span><b>lion-tailed macaques \u2014 the highest population <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the endangered species in any protected area. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>News<\/b><strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newindianexpress.com\/states\/karnataka\/2026\/Jul\/11\/expert-committee-flags-ecological-risks-opposes-sharavathi-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NIE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sharavathi Lion-Tailed Macaque Sanctuary is located in the state of Karnataka.
