{"id":29777,"date":"2025-02-01T03:00:01","date_gmt":"2025-01-31T21:30:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=29777"},"modified":"2025-04-09T10:46:38","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T05:16:38","slug":"telecom-disputes-settlement-and-appellate-tribunal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/telecom-disputes-settlement-and-appellate-tribunal\/","title":{"rendered":"Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was established by amending the <strong>TRAI Act of 1997 in the year 2000.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was set up to <strong>adjudicate disputes and dispose of appeals<\/strong> with a view to protect the interests of <strong>service providers and consumers<\/strong> of the telecom sector and to promote and ensure orderly growth of the telecom sector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Composition of Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It consists of a <strong>Chairperson and two Members<\/strong> appointed by the Central Government.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Eligibility of Members of Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chairperson:<\/strong> The <strong>Chairperson<\/strong> should be or should have <strong>been a Judge of the Supreme Court or the Chief Justice of a High Court<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Other member: <\/strong>They should have held the post <strong>of Secretary to the Government of India<\/strong> or any equivalent post in the Central Government or the State Government for a period of <strong>not less than two years<\/strong> or a person who is well versed in the field of technology, telecommunication, industry, commerce or administration.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tenure of office:<\/strong> The Chairperson of the tribunal shall hold office for a term of <strong>maximum four years or till the age of seventy year<\/strong>s, whichever is earlier.<\/li>\n<li>Other members hold office for <strong>four years<\/strong> or till the age <strong>sixty-five years<\/strong>, whichever is earlier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Powers and Jurisdiction of Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It exercises jurisdiction over <strong>Telecom, Broadcasting, IT and Airport tariff matters under <\/strong>the TRAI Act, 1997, the Information Technology Act, 2008 and the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority of India Act, 2008.<\/li>\n<li>It <strong>exercises original as well as appellate jurisdiction<\/strong> in regard to Telecom, Broadcasting and Airport tariff matters.<\/li>\n<li>In regard to <strong>Cyber matters<\/strong> the Tribunal <strong>exercises only<\/strong> the <strong>appellate jurisdiction<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In January 2004, the Government included <strong>broadcasting and cable services<\/strong> also within the purview of TRAI Act.
