Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Supreme Court recently asked the Noida district hospital to constitute a primary medical board to examine the option of passive euthanasia for a 31-year-old who has been in a vegetative state for over a decade because of quadriplegia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Euthanasia<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u2018Euthanasia\u2019 is derived from the Greek, \u2018Eu\u2019 meaning \u2018good\u2019 and \u2018thanatos\u2019 meaning \u2018death\u2019, put together it means \u2018good death\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euthanasia is defined as the <\/span><b>hastening of death of a patient to prevent further sufferings.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Types<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Active euthanasia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to the <\/span><b>physician&#8217;s deliberate act,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> usually the administration of lethal drugs, <\/span><b>to end <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an incurably or<\/span><b> terminally ill patient\u2019s life.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are<\/span><b> three types<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of active euthanasia in relation to giving consent for euthanasia, namely\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>voluntary euthanasia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 <\/span><b>at patient request,\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>nonvoluntary <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013 without patient consent,\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>involuntary euthanasia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the <\/span><b>patient is not in a position to give consent.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Passive euthanasia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refers to <\/span><b>withholding or withdrawing treatment <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is <\/span><b>necessary for maintaining life.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Common conditions<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which make patients seek euthanasia are <\/span><b>terminally ill cancer <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">patients, <\/span><b>acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS),<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other terminally ill conditions where there is no active treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Legality:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Passive euthanasia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>generally accepted worldwide.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Active involuntary euthanasia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <\/span><b>illegal in almost all countries.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Practicing active voluntary euthanasia is illegal and considered criminal homicide in most of the countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Legality in India:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Passive Euthanasia:<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A five-judge bench of the <\/span><b>Supreme Court in Common Cause vs. Union of India (2018)<\/b> <b>recognised a person\u2019s right to die with dignity.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It said that a <\/span><b>terminally ill person can opt for passive euthanasia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>execute a living will<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to refuse medical treatment.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Court permitted an individual to draft a living will specifying that she or he will not be put on life support if they slip into an incurable coma.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Court <\/span><b>recognised the right to die with dignity <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as a <\/span><b>fundamental right <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and an aspect of <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/upsc-exam\/fundamental-rights\/\" target=\"_blank\">Article 21<\/a> (Right to Life).<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Active euthanasia: In India, active euthanasia is a crime.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What is Quadriplegia?<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quadriplegia, or <\/span><b>Tetraplegia, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a condition of <\/span><b>paralysis that affects all the limbs and body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the neck to the down.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>most common cause<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of quadriplegia is an <\/span><b>injury to the spinal cord at the level of the neck.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quadriplegia is <\/span><b>sometimes treatable,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but in<\/span><b> most cases<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> injury <\/span><b>results in permanent paralysis.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quadriplegia is when the person can\u2019t deliberately control or move his muscles, and it can affect a person from the neck to down.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on how and why it happens, it can affect the ability to move parts of the body, as well as some of the body\u2019s automatic processes that keep the person
