{"id":30333,"date":"2025-02-24T12:24:20","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T06:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=30333"},"modified":"2025-04-10T09:55:05","modified_gmt":"2025-04-10T04:25:05","slug":"pagri-sambhal-jatta-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/pagri-sambhal-jatta-movement\/","title":{"rendered":"Pagri Sambhal Jatta Movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Pagri Sambhal Jatta Movement Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>Recently, farmers protesting at the Punjab and Haryana borders are observed February 23 as Pagri Sambhal Diwas, in honour of Ajit Singh, paternal uncle of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh.<\/p>\n<h2>About Pagri Sambhal Jatta Movement<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It was started by Ajit Singh in 1907, to protest against three <strong>agricultural laws<\/strong> imposed by the British.<\/li>\n<li>Pagri Sambhal Jatta\u2019 literally translates <strong>to \u2018take care of your turban, o farmer\u2019,<\/strong> and invokes self respect and honour.<\/li>\n<li>The slogan \u201cPagri Sambhal Jatta\u201d was coined by <strong>Banke Dayal<\/strong>, a nationalist poet, and became a symbol of resistance.<\/li>\n<li>The three laws were: <strong>The Punjab Land Alienation Act, 1900; The Punjab Land Colonisation Act, 1906; and The Doab Bari Act, 1907.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Punjab Land Alienation Act<\/strong> restricted the rights of farmers to sell or mortgage their land freely.<\/li>\n<li>It favored moneylenders and landlords, making it difficult for peasants to escape debt.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Punjab Land Colonisation Act<\/strong> gave the <strong>British control over land ownership<\/strong> in the newly developed Chenab Colony (now in Pakistan). Farmers had to transfer their land to the British government upon death instead of passing it to their heirs.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Doab Bari Act, 1907,<\/strong> too, took away farmers\u2019 <strong>ownership rights over their lands,<\/strong> effectively reducing them to contract workers.<\/li>\n<li>Along with this, the British raised taxes on agricultural land and water for irrigation, increasing the financial burden on farmers. Many small farmers and peasants were forced into debt and land loss.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Ajit Singh and Kishan Singh (Bhagat Singh\u2019s father) formed the Bharat Mata Society, a revolutionary group for farmers. Lala Lajpat Rai and other leaders also supported the movement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Impact of the Pagri Sambhal Movement<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Pagri Sambhal Jatta was one of the first major farmer movements against British rule, laying the foundation for future resistance in Punjab.<\/li>\n<li>The agitation led to mass protests and civil disobedience.
