transboundary threats to the biodiversity of this lake basin.<\/p>\n<h2>About Lake Tanganyika\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an ancient lake located in <strong>East Africa.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bordering Countries:<\/strong> Burundi, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC),Tanzania and Zambia.<\/li>\n<li>It is extremely long, deepest and is the <strong>longest lake in the world,<\/strong> measuring over 400 miles long.<\/li>\n<li>It occupies the southern end of the <strong>Western Rift Valley<\/strong>, and for most of its length the land rises steeply from its shores.<\/li>\n<li>It is situated on the line dividing the <strong>floral regions of eastern and western Africa<\/strong>, and oil palms, which are characteristic of the flora of western Africa, grow along the lake\u2019s shores.<\/li>\n<li>The largest rivers discharging into the lake are the <strong>Malagarasi, the Ruzizi<\/strong>, and the <strong>Kalambo.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Its outlet is the <strong>Lukuga River,<\/strong> which flows into the <strong>Lualaba River.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rice<\/strong> and subsistence crops are grown <strong>along the shores,<\/strong> and fishing is of some significance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Recent Initiative to Protect Biodiversity of Lake Tanganyika<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>UN Environment Programme (UNEP)-<\/strong>led initiative and funded by the <strong>Global Environment Facility<\/strong> (GEF).<\/li>\n<li>It aims to enhance transboundary cooperation among the four countries bordering Lake Tanganyika.<\/li>\n<li>It will also promote sustainable fisheries, biodiversity conservation, and the restoration of degraded landscapes in the basin.<\/li>\n<li>The initiative will protect core conservation zones in three identified protected areas and promote sustainable natural resource use in protected areas and their buffer zones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Lake
