


{"id":3067,"date":"2025-05-03T11:41:49","date_gmt":"2025-05-03T06:11:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=3067"},"modified":"2025-05-17T11:33:57","modified_gmt":"2025-05-17T06:03:57","slug":"what-is-the-kendu-leaf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/what-is-the-kendu-leaf\/","title":{"rendered":"Kendu Leaf"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Kendu Leaf Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>Eight Gram Sabhas in Baipariguda block of Koraput district, Odisha have collected over 4 lakh bundles of kendu leaves and are awaiting government notification to deregulate the trade.<\/p>\n<h2>Why in the News?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>In the\u00a0<strong>Koraput district<\/strong>\u00a0of Odisha,\u00a0<strong>eight Gram Sabhas<\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0<strong>Baipariguda block,<\/strong>\u00a0including villages like\u00a0<strong>Kalatha Jodi<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Kupuli Guda<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Badali Beda,<\/strong>\u00a0have collectively harvested more than\u00a0<strong>4 lakh bundles<\/strong>\u00a0of kendu leaves during the 2025 season.<\/li>\n<li>These tribal communities are seeking to\u00a0<strong>independently manage and sell kendu leaves<\/strong>\u00a0under the\u00a0<strong>Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What is Kendu Leaf?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>Kendu Leaf<\/strong>, also called\u00a0<strong>\u201cGreen Gold of Odisha\u201d<\/strong>, is one of the most vital\u00a0<strong>non-wood forest products (NWFPs)<\/strong>\u00a0in the region. In other parts of India, it is known as the\u00a0<strong>Tendu Leaf<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>nationalised<\/strong>, like\u00a0<strong>Bamboo<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Sal seed<\/strong>, meaning its collection and trade are regulated by the government.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Primary use<\/strong>: Used to\u00a0<strong>roll tobacco into bidis<\/strong>\u00a0(local cigarettes); also holds\u00a0<strong>medicinal value<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Producer States<\/strong>:\u00a0<strong>Madhya Pradesh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Chhattisgarh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Odisha<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Jharkhand<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Andhra Pradesh<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Maharashtra<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gujarat<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Odisha<\/strong>\u00a0is the\u00a0<strong>third-largest producer<\/strong>\u00a0after MP and Chhattisgarh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Tribal Rights Under FRA<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Forest Rights Act (FRA), 2006<\/strong>\u00a0recognises rights of forest-dwelling communities to\u00a0<strong>collect, use, and sell minor forest produce (MFP)<\/strong>\u00a0like kendu leaves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2012 Amendment<\/strong>\u00a0to FRA:\n<ul>\n<li>Empowers communities to\u00a0<strong>process<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>store<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>transport<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>sell MFP<\/strong>\u00a0without paying royalties or seeking permission.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transit permits<\/strong>\u00a0must be issued by the\u00a0<strong>Community Forest Rights Management Committee (CFRMC)<\/strong>, not forest officials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>CFRMC Role &amp; Transit Permits<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Under FRA,\u00a0<strong>Transit Permits<\/strong>\u00a0must be issued by the\u00a0<strong>Community Forest Rights Management Committee (CFRMC)<\/strong>.
