Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Sharavathi Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The High Court of Karnataka recently ordered an issue of notice to the Centre and State government on a PIL petition, which had questioned the legality of the approval granted by the State Wildlife Board and the in-principle approval granted by the Standing Committee of the National Board for Wildlife for the Sharavathi PSHP.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Sharavathi Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a PSHP proposed on the <\/span><b>Sharavathi River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Shivamogga district, <\/span><b>Karnataka<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This project, with its aim to generate <\/span><b>2,000 MW<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of power, will be the biggest of its kind in the country.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is being <\/span><b>developed by Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project involves <\/span><b>building a pumped storage power plant between two existing reservoirs.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Talakalale dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which stands at 62.48 meters tall, will be the<\/span><b> upper reservoir.\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This dam currently helps balance water for the existing Sharavathy hydroelectric project.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Gerusoppa dam<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be the <\/span><b>lower reservoir,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it is about 64 meters tall.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Water <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will be <\/span><b>pumped uphill during off-peak hours<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>released downhill to generate electricity during peak demand.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project aims to<\/span><b> utilise renewable energy sources<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and reduce carbon emissions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Modelled on the lines of Telangana\u2019s Kaleshwaram project,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it also aims to <\/span><b>supply drinking water to Bengaluru.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five tunnels and eight pumping stations are critical parts of the plan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project <\/span><b>falls within the Eco-Sensitive Zone (ESZ) of the Sharavathi Wildlife Sanctuary, <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which is home to the endangered lion-tailed macaque, hornbills, king cobras, and numerous endemic plant species of the Western Ghats.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Key Facts about Sharavathi River<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a river in the <\/span><b>western Karnataka <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">state.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>one of the few rivers in India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which<\/span><b> flows in the west direction.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A large part of the river basin lies in the <\/span><b>Western Ghats.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Course: <\/span><b>Rising in the Western forms the <\/span><b>Jog Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in India,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where the river falls from a height of 253 m.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diverse geological features mark the river\u2019s course, including rocky outcrops, fertile plains, and deep gorges.<\/span><\/li>\n<li
