{"id":3079,"date":"2023-02-10T06:01:15","date_gmt":"2023-02-10T00:31:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=3079"},"modified":"2025-03-26T10:10:33","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T04:40:33","slug":"thane-creek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/thane-creek\/","title":{"rendered":"Thane Creek"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>About Thane Creek:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is an <strong>inlet along the shoreline of the Arabian Sea<\/strong> that <strong>isolates the city of Mumbai<\/strong> from the Indian mainland.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>east bank lies in the Thane and Navi Mumbai districts<\/strong>, while the <strong>west bank is in the Greater Mumbai district, Maharashtra.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>Asia&#8217;s largest creek,<\/strong> with a length of 26 km.<\/li>\n<li>Thane Creek is <strong>fed by numerous freshwater sources<\/strong> (of which <strong>Ulhas river is the largest<\/strong>), making the <strong>water brackish.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The creek is covered with <strong>mangroves on both sides.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Thane Creek is a <strong>very important wintering ground for waterbirds<\/strong>. It supports over 1,00,000 birds <strong>during winter,<\/strong> including the <strong>iconic flamingos<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>major part of the creek<\/strong> has been declared a bird sanctuary called <strong>Thane Creek Flamingo Bird Sanctuary (TCFS).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Thane Creek Flamingo Bird Sanctuary (TCFS):<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>TCFS also referred to as the <strong>Airoli Flamingo Sanctuary,<\/strong> is the <strong>first flamingo sanctuary in India <\/strong>located along the western bank of the Thane creek.<\/li>\n<li>\u00b7It encompasses more than <strong>1600 hectares of mudflats, mangroves, and water bodies.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The area was <strong>declared a flamingo sanctuary in 2015<\/strong> and is home to substantial bird life \u2013 both residential and migratory.<\/li>\n<li>TCFS\u00a0 was <strong>declared a Ramsar site<\/strong> by the International Wetlands Convention <strong>in 2022.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Flora:<\/strong> <strong>Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata<\/strong>, Acanthus ilicifolius, Aleuropus lagopoides, Sesuvium protulacastrumetc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fauna:<\/strong> Over <strong>205 species of birds<\/strong> have been reported from this area, including <strong>Lesser Flamingo, Greater Flamingo<\/strong>, Asian Openbill, White Stork, Pied Avocet, Eastern Golden Plover, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is a creek?<\/h3>\n<p>A creek is a small river or a rivulet. Creeks have all the characteristics that rivers possess with a few differences between the two. A slender channel flanked by islands may also be called a creek.
