{"id":30838,"date":"2023-08-23T05:09:23","date_gmt":"2023-08-22T23:39:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=30838"},"modified":"2025-04-16T00:20:06","modified_gmt":"2025-04-15T18:50:06","slug":"defence-research-and-development-organisation-drdo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/defence-research-and-development-organisation-drdo\/","title":{"rendered":"Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO):<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>R&amp;D wing of the Ministry of Defence<\/strong>, Govt of India, with a vision <strong>to empower India with cutting-edge defence technologies<\/strong> and a mission to <strong>achieve self-reliance in critical defence technologies <\/strong>and systems.<\/li>\n<li>It is <strong>India&#8217;s largest research organisation.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li><strong>Formation<\/strong>: The organisation was <strong>formed in 1958 from the amalgamation of<\/strong> the then already functioning <strong>Technical Development Establishment (TDEs) of the Indian Army<\/strong> <strong>and the Directorate of Technical Development &amp; Production (DTDP) with the Defence Science Organisation (DSO).\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarters: New Delhi.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It <strong>has a<\/strong> <strong>network of laboratories engaged in developing defence technologie<\/strong>s covering various fields, like aeronautics, armaments, electronics, land combat engineering, life sciences, materials, missiles, and naval systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Major Projects:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>DRDO&#8217;s<strong> first projec<\/strong>t for the Indian military <strong>was in surface-to-air missiles (SAM) known as Project Indigo.<\/strong> However, it received little success and was therefore discontinued.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Since being set up, DRDO has ac<strong>hieved many successes in developing major systems<\/strong> and critical technologies <strong>like aircraft avionics, UAVs, small arms, artillery systems, <\/strong>EW Systems, tanks and armoured vehicles, sonar systems, command and control systems and missile systems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 2016, It successfully tested its first indigenously developed heavy-duty drone, Rustom 2,<\/strong> which is an unmanned armed combat vehicle developed on the lines of the US&#8217;s Predator drone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>DRDO co-developed INS Arihant<\/strong>, <strong>India&#8217;s first nuclear ballistic missile submarin<\/strong>e, which became operational in 2018.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In March 2019, DRDO developed India&#8217;s first anti-satellite system <\/strong>that made India one of the space superpowers.<\/li>\n<li>DRDO has also <strong>developed several ballistic missiles under its Integrated Guided Missile Development Programm<\/strong>e, which includes missiles like <strong>Prithvi, Trishul, Agni, Akash and Nag.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1)\u00a0What is an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)?<\/h3>\n<p>An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), often referred to as a drone, is an aircraft that operates without a human pilot on board.
