It has 10 sensors.<\/li>\n<li>It measured the temperature profile of the lunar topsoil around the South Pole to understand its thermal behaviour.<\/li>\n<li>It was developed by the\u00a0<strong>Space Physics Laboratory of ISRO\u2019s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC),<\/strong> together with the\u00a0<strong>Physical Research Laboratory<\/strong> (PRL), Ahmedabad.<\/li>\n<li>Its findings reflect this\u00a0<strong>variation between the moon\u2019s surface<\/strong>, which is covered by a patina of loose rocks and dust called the lunar regolith, and 10 cm under it.<\/li>\n<li>Its data show that\u00a0<strong>at the moon\u2019s surface<\/strong> (where the lander is located, a point between the craters Manzinus C and Simpelius N), the temperature\u00a0<strong>is 40-50 degrees<\/strong> C. But just under 80 mm under, it plunges to\u00a0<strong>around -10 degrees C.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance of the findings<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The temperature variation indicates that the moon\u2019s\u00a0<strong>topsoil is a powerful thermal insulator,<\/strong> in keeping with previous findings.<\/li>\n<li>It adds credence to the idea that it\u00a0<strong>can be used to build habitats for humans<\/strong> to shield them from frigid conditions and harmful radiation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are thermal insulators?<\/h3>\n<p>A thermal insulator is a material or substance that has low thermal conductivity, which means it does not easily allow heat to pass through it.
