{"id":31007,"date":"2023-08-31T05:46:58","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T00:16:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=31007"},"modified":"2025-04-16T08:21:40","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T02:51:40","slug":"mahendragiri-frigate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/mahendragiri-frigate\/","title":{"rendered":"Mahendragiri Frigate"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>About Mahendragiri Frigate<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the\u00a0<strong>seventh and last stealth frigate of Project 17A Frigates.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<strong>named after a mountain peak in Eastern Ghats located in Odisha.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The ship is being<strong> built by the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>What is Project 17A?<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>The project was launched by the defence forces of India\u00a0<strong>to construct a series of stealth guided-missile frigates.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Under the Project 17A programme,\u00a0<strong>four ships by Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and three by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE) are being built.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These warships\u00a0<strong>follow the Project 17 Class Frigates<\/strong> (Shivalik Class) and boast\u00a0<strong>enhanced stealth features, advanced weapons, sensors,<\/strong> and platform management systems.<\/li>\n<li>Project 17A ships have been\u00a0<strong>designed in-house by Indian Navy\u2019s Warship Design Bureau WDB.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>As much as\u00a0<strong>75% of the orders for equipment and systems\u00a0<\/strong>of Project 17A ships\u00a0<strong>are from indigenous firms, including MSMEs.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<strong>first six ships of the project have been launched so far by MDL &amp; GRSE, between 2019-2023.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Q1) What are Frigates?<\/h3>\n<p>Frigates are a class of naval warships known for their versatility and capability to perform a wide range of missions. They are typically smaller and less heavily armed than destroyers, but they are larger and more powerful than corvettes or patrol boats.
