{"id":31155,"date":"2026-04-21T12:00:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T06:30:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=31155"},"modified":"2026-04-21T13:37:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T08:07:24","slug":"umiam-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/umiam-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Umiam Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Umiam Lake Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Meghalaya government recently announced that Lumpongdeng Island in the middle of Umiam Lake will be kept out of the proposed luxury resort project, following protests and concerns raised by local stakeholders.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Umiam Lake<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Umiam Lake, also known as <\/span><b>Barapani Lake,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a <\/span><b>man-made reservoir<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the state of <\/span><b>Meghalaya <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 km <\/span><b>north of Shillong<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the capital of Meghalaya.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>encircled <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">by lush green <\/span><b>East Khasi hills.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>History<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was <\/span><b>created in 1965<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of the <\/span><b>Umiam Umtru Hydroelectric Power Project,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which was the<\/span><b> first hydroelectric project in Northeast India.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project was <\/span><b>initiated by the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with the <\/span><b>assistance of the Government of India<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><b>Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The project involved the c<\/span><b>onstruction of a dam across the Umiam River<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is a <\/span><b>tributary of the <\/b><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/brahmaputra-river-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">Brahmaputra <\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/brahmaputra-river-system\/\" target=\"_blank\">River.<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The dam is 2200 feet long and 95 feet high.
