{"id":31262,"date":"2026-10-26T12:15:44","date_gmt":"2026-10-26T06:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=31262"},"modified":"2026-10-26T16:58:46","modified_gmt":"2026-10-26T11:28:46","slug":"melioidosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/melioidosis\/","title":{"rendered":"India Study Finds Melioidosis in 262 of 2,953 High-Risk Hospital Patients"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Melioidosis Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study published in The Lancet Global Health, assessed high-risk hospitalised adults at 15 Indian tertiary-care centres between 2023 -2025 and confirmed melioidosis was found in 262 of 2,953 patients, of those diagnosed, 50 (19.1%) died in hospital.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Melioidosis<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an <\/span><b>infectious disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by the environmental Gram-negative bacterium <\/span><b>Burkholderia pseudomallei.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Burkholderia pseudomallei<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is found in <\/span><b>soil and water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><b>tropical and subtropical regions.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is seasonal, with 75\u201385% of cases occurring during the rainy season.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is <\/span><b>common in people living<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with: <\/span><b>Diabetes, Alcohol use disorder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Chronic kidney disease Chronic lung disease (like cystic fibrosis or COPD).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Symptoms:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fever, headache, trouble breathing and Stomach or chest pain etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>Transmission<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection usually occurs when <\/span><b>contaminated soil or water enters the body<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through cuts or wounds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inhalation of <\/span><b>contaminated dust or water droplets<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and, less commonly, ingestion of contaminated water can also transmit the bacterium.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It <\/span><b>is not typically transmitted from animals to humans<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and human-to-human transmission is exceptionally rare.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melioidosis can cause <\/span><b>pneumonia, bloodstream infection, skin and soft-tissue infections<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, abscesses in organs such as the liver and spleen, septic arthritis and bone infections.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an infectious disease endemic in <\/span><b>Southeast Asia, northern Australia,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> much of the Indian subcontinent, southern China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Treatment:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment has two phases: an initial intensive phase with <\/span><b>intravenous antibiotics,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> followed by <\/span><b>prolonged oral eradication therapy<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce the risk of relapse.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/sci-tech\/health\/melioidosis-in-india-a-potentially-deadly-infection-that-may-be-going-undetected\/article71616567.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TH<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by the environmental Gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei.
