{"id":31262,"date":"2025-09-11T08:15:44","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T02:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=31262"},"modified":"2025-09-11T13:29:43","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T07:59:43","slug":"melioidosis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/melioidosis\/","title":{"rendered":"Melioidosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><b>Melioidosis<\/b> <b>Latest News<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recently, health authorities have confirmed melioidosis in a patient from Turakapalem village in Andhra Pradesh.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>About Melioidosis<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is caused by<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an <\/span><b>infectious disease<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> caused by the <\/span><b>environmental Gram-negative bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei.\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is seasonal, with 75\u201385% of cases <\/span><b>occurring during the rainy season.<\/b><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has a high case fatality rate (CFR) ranging from 16% to 50% in known endemic regions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an infectious disease <\/span><b>endemic in Southeast Asia<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, northern Australia, much of the Indian subcontinent, southern China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is common in people living with: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/diabetes-and-its-types\/\" target=\"_blank\">Diabetes<\/a><\/strong>, Alcohol use disorder, Chronic kidney disease Chronic lung disease (like cystic fibrosis or COPD).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Symptoms:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Fever, headache, trouble breathing and Stomach or chest pain etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Transmission of Melioidosis<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Touching contaminated soil<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the hands or feet, especially if there are small cuts in the skin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Drinking contaminated water<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that has not been chlorinated<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Breathing in contaminated dust<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or water droplets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Exposure to severe weather events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as tropical monsoon storms, cyclones, hurricanes and typhoons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Treatment:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> At present, there is <\/span><b>no vaccine available for melioidosis.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Source:<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/health\/an-air-of-mystery-surrounds-the-deaths-in-turakapalem-village-near-andhras-guntur-city\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DTE<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Melioidosis is a bacterial infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei.
