{"id":31570,"date":"2025-03-30T10:58:18","date_gmt":"2025-03-30T05:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/?p=31570"},"modified":"2025-04-16T13:00:55","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T07:30:55","slug":"kasampatty-sacred-grove","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vajiramandravi.com\/current-affairs\/kasampatty-sacred-grove\/","title":{"rendered":"Kasampatty Sacred Grove"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Kasampatty Sacred Grove Latest News<\/h2>\n<p>The Tamil Nadu government recently notified Kasampatty (Veera Kovil) sacred grove as a Biodiversity Heritage Site.<\/p>\n<h2>About Kasampatty Sacred Grove<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The Kasampatti Sacred Grove, also known as <strong>Veera Kovil Sacred Grove,<\/strong> is a revered ecological and cultural site located in Kasampatti village, Dindigul District, <strong>Tamil Nadu.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Spanning 4.97 hectares <strong>near the Alagarmalai Reserve Forest<\/strong>, this grove is enveloped by lush mango plantations, enhancing its natural beauty and fertility.<\/li>\n<li>It hosts an impressive variety of species &#8211; 48 plant species, 22 shrubs, 21 lianas (woody vines), and 29 herbs.<\/li>\n<li>It also shelters more than 12 species of birds, along with small mammals, reptiles, and numerous insects, highlighting the grove\u2019s genetic richness.<\/li>\n<li>The Tamil Nadu government has notified Kasampatti Sacred Grove as the <strong>state&#8217;s second Biodiversity Heritage Site<\/strong> under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are Biodiversity Heritage Sites (BHS)?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>BHS are <strong>unique ecosystems<\/strong> having rich biodiversity comprising <strong>any one or more of the following <\/strong>components:\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Richness of wild <\/strong>as well as <strong>domesticated species or intra-specific categories.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>High endemism.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Presence of <strong>rare and threatened species<\/strong>, <strong>keystone species<\/strong>, and species of evolutionary significance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wild ancestors of domestic\/<\/strong>cultivated <strong>species <\/strong>or their varieties.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Past preeminence of biological components <\/strong>represented by <strong>fossil beds <\/strong>and having significant cultural, ethical, or aesthetic values and are important for the maintenance of cultural diversity, with or without a long history of human association with them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Under Section 37 of the <strong>Biological Diversity Act, <\/strong>2002, the <strong>State Government, <\/strong>in <strong>consultation with local bodie<\/strong>s, may<strong> notify areas<\/strong> of biodiversity importance <strong>as BHS.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>State Government, in consultation with the Central Government<\/strong>, may <strong>frame rules for the management<\/strong> and conservation <strong>of BHS.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The creation of <strong>BHS may not put any restriction on the prevailing practices and usages of the local communities<\/strong> other than those voluntarily decided by them.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The purpose of declaring BHS is to enhance the quality of life of the local communities through the conservation of such sites.<\/li>\n<li>In 2007, the <strong>Nallur Tamarind Grove in Bengaluru, <\/strong>Karnataka, was designated as I<strong>ndia&#8217;s first BHS.\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Kasampatty Sacred Grove FAQs<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Q1<\/strong>.
